What do you do if you're afraid to switch careers in Higher Education?

Finally, connect with a mentor for guidance and support throughout your transition, utilizing their experience to navigate this change confidently.

I had so many fears when I first tried to pivot out of Higher Ed. My first attempt was borne out of resentment after having been passed over for an internal opportunity. I wasn't in the right headspace at the time -- and I don't think I actually wanted to leave the student affairs profession. I was just upset at the situation I was in. The next time I attempted it in earnest was during my first semester of my graduate program. I realized that a future in student affairs wasn't for me -- which was scary to accept! I had so many people in my corner, I felt I was letting them down by rejecting what I had thought I wanted for the longest time. Ultimately, I gave myself permission to change my mind and embrace trying something new.

You could explore using your higher education experience at the international level. If you (and/or your family) are open to living in another country, research and consider using your experience in administration or academic teaching to work globally. The process is not instant; it takes time and intentional planning. However, you can gain valuable experience while sharing your talents with new colleagues and students from a different cultural context. Speaking from experience, I have worked in international higher education for 10+ years in seven countries, specifically in student affairs, services, or administration. As a career advisor, I led countless workshops and advised many students on articulating their "transferable skills," yet somehow struggled to do this myself! Go figure. What helped me to better understand how my skills could translate to new roles, was getting my resume reviewed by folks who had made similar career pivots. Their insight and advice helped me to understand my strengths + highlight skills I may have downplayed or left off my resume. Talking with a variety of people in my network also got me more comfortable with speaking about myself and my experiences -- which was extremely useful as I used these conversations as practice material for interviews!

Making a career pivot takes time and patience. You have to give yourself grace but also not lose sight of your motivation and hustle. It's easy to get down on yourself and take things personal during the job search process, especially when transitioning to a new industry, but you have to remember that what is for you won't pass you by. Trust that rejection really is redirection to something different and unexpectedly (or wildly!) better.
