What do you do if your workplace communication is hindering your professional growth?

It really depends on what aspect of your communication may be hindering your growth! Generally speaking, collaborative, patient communication that welcomes the opinions of others, avoids "shutting people down," and allows room for listening is the healthiest route to choose. Clarity and brevity are also great practices in most fields. We tend to communicate similarly (although not identically) in our personal and professional lives as well, so if you're trying to effect a change, make sure not to limit your practice to the workplace.

I believe it is essential to approach the situation with optimism and a proactive mindset. Take this as an opportunity to reflect on your goals and aspirations. Use the challenges you encounter as stepping stones rather than obstacles. Consider initiating open and constructive conversations with your supervisors or colleagues about your career development needs. Seek out mentors or professional networks that can provide guidance and support. I try to remember, every setback is a chance to learn and grow stronger. Identify the root cause. Knowing the root cause will help you deal with the problem itself and not the effects of the problem. When you deal with the root cause of the problem every other underlying effect of the problem will be easily solved.

Feedback doesn't have to be scary. I encourage normalizing feedback in conversations so that you consistently have a pulse on how you're performing. Embrace curiosity and learning from colleagues. If you're actively seeking and implementing feedback, you reduce the chances of being caught off guard by a larger issue or performance review.

Remember, listening is not just about hearing words; it's about understanding and connecting with the thoughts and emotions behind them. I start with assuming good intent.

Confidence comes from within. Trust your abilities, skills, and achievements. When you believe in your message, others will, too. Remember, by expressing yourself clearly and confidently, you communicate effectively and leave a lasting impression.

We can learn so much from our triggers. If something is ‘hindering’ us, it’s there for a reason. What is it trying to teach you? For what reason did you put yourself in that situation? (It might not seem like it’s your fault, but your 100% responsible)

I would consider working with a coach. Someone to hold the space whilst I explore what might be hindering my communication style. What blind spots I might have. And how I could work on them.

Another thing to consider is to focus on not losing your identity, keep improving yourself at what you do and do your work excellently, to the point where you become indispensable to the organisation. When you do, you can begin to make the necessary communication adjustments where necessary, as you've now become and will be recognised as a professional at what you do.
