What do you do if your workload as a teacher seeking a promotion becomes overwhelming?

Teacher workloads can easily become daunting. With promotion on the horizon, learning to identify the most impactful tasks in itself can be a challenge. Holding your student learning outcomes at the core, you may then reflect on your school goals and key initiatives to determine the next set of priorities in line with your ambitions. Embracing supports of technology, automation and routine can make necessary, yet not hugely impactful, tasks more efficient.

Large tasks can seem overwhelming, so break them down into smaller, more manageable steps. You can use the Eisenhower Matrix to prioritize tasks. ~ Urgent and Important ~ Important but Not Urgent ~ Urgent but Not Important ~ Not Urgent and Not Important. By using this matrix, you can focus on completing urgent and important tasks first while also allocating time for important but not urgent activities that contribute to your long-term professional growth and success.

To manage your workload, you should set a realistic workload goal that is achievable. You can use SMART method which is one of the most popular frameworks for setting goals or objectives. SMART goals are: 1) Specific – The goal should be clear and specific about the outcome you want to achieve. 2) Measurable - You should be able to measure your progress or performance to determine whether you have achieved the goal. 3) Achievable – You should set a realistic and attainable goal. 4) Relevant – The goal you set should be related to the outcome you want to achieve. 5) Time-Bound – You should set a timeframe for achieving your goal.

Create a resilience wellbeing plan and tell your manager so they are clear what your boundaries are. Say no to work that is under resourced, a project not a task and has no clear outcomes. If you are turning to drugs and alcohol or getting sick a lot then you are not getting the resources and support needed to manage stress. If your boss is a bully leave ASAP there is no need to put up with it.

Remember, there is more to life than work!
