During Covid, many Companies including the military had to learn how to telework effectively. One way to make work enjoyable is to add a daily ice breaker activity. This can be done before a meeting/sync and gives the team a chance to think critically, have fun, and get to know each other. Some examples are: Have each member describe themselves with an emoji. A virtual scavenger hunt where you have 1 minute to find whatever object around you related to a specific prompt. Or, now with AI, encourage each member to have the most creative backdrop during a set meeting.

Collaboration is key. With every staff meeting I moderate, I ask every person on the team to be prepared to answer two questions. The first is what was their big success since last meeting. The second is what is an issue they need help from a team member on. That second question changes the tone, focusing on teamwork. We break down barriers and don’t worry about competing against colleagues. And the question forces us to understand and appreciate the skills and abilities the others have. We become stronger together. And asking for that help makes it real.

Virtual teams have specific training needs, and often, companies assume that everyone knows the basics. Always train your people on how to use virtual meeting platforms and software, from Windows to Word to Zoom. Provide a guide and practice hosting meetings. Communication, document editing, and etiquette standards should also be provided. Online business communications are completely different from social media interaction. To shore up the team spirit of my group, I should provide it increasing scope for socializing. By arranging parties, games, outings, cultural evenings, I shall be making available avenues so that a sense of camaraderie develops among them. This will create bond among them and they will be enthused to work as a cohesive team. It will further lead to a climate of positivity and creativity facilitating realisation of organisational objectives and goals.
