What do you do if your user interviews yield qualitative data?

If my user interviews yield qualitative data, I would first organize and categorize the information gathered from the interviews, identifying common themes, patterns, and insights. Then, I would analyze the qualitative data to extract meaningful findings and actionable insights that can inform design decisions or product improvements. Utilizing qualitative data analysis techniques such as thematic analysis or grounded theory, I would strive to uncover user needs, pain points, behaviors, and preferences. Finally, I would document and present the findings in a clear and concise manner, ensuring that stakeholders and team members can understand and utilize the insights effectively in the design and development process.

Spend some time with data looking at the list of users and consider factors such as role, recency, quality etc. This would help save a lot of time that you would instead would have wasted with an interview without getting any relevant actionable insights.

Start by clarifying the objectives of your research. What specific questions are you trying to answer through the user interviews? Having clear research objectives will guide your analysis process and ensure that you focus on relevant aspects of the data. Based on the nature of your research and the type of qualitative data collected, you can then choose appropriate analysis techniques.

Organizing the feedback data collected becomes very crucial, especially if the volume of interviews being conducted is high. Also try to maintain a standard template of questionnaire along with enough space to capture miscellaneous user inputs. It helps to also store transcripts in a shared folder along with appropriate nomenclature with user name and date/timestamp.

Before diving into the analysis, ensure your data is well-organized and easily accessible. Transcribe the interviews if they haven't been transcribed already (if necessary). Organize the transcripts systematically, making it easier to review and analyze the qualitative data.

Use thematic or content analysis techniques to code the qualitative data. Identify recurring themes, patterns, and key insights that emerge from the interviews. Assign codes or labels to segments of text that represent different topics or categories.

The question posed in the title of this article is misleading. Good mixed methods researchers understand that interviewing—positioned in the context of UX Research—is best suited for qualitative data collection. While one could argue that structured interviews with a large sample could be used to create credible quantitative datasets, I would argue that at that point we should stop referring to it as an interview, and start calling it a survey.

Use the insights gathered from the user interviews to iterate and refine the design of the product or service. Incorporate user feedback into the design process, test iteratively, and continue to refine the user experience based on ongoing research insights.
