Every year as a team we assess the firm's strategic objectives, our team's performance objectives, and then I ask the team what they think their skills gaps are to achieve the strategic and performance objectives. As we assess the gaps we then look at how we will upskill, is it training, learning from peers, stretch assignments, getting out to conferences, or something else? The reality is in most companies there isn't always a training budget to send them off to training. As a leader the one thing we have in at our disposal is the ability to create space for them to have time to up skill. As the leader if you don't create any space for this, then your hurting your team's future success.

You can do this by offering training courses, workshops, webinars, podcasts, books, articles, or other resources that are relevant to your industry and your team's goals. Forget KPI's, introduce KLI's. Key Learning Indicators. Because everyone should have the right to learn and make mistakes. To become and stay an innovative company, it's not only about KPI's, because they give you the risk of a tunnelvision. Give people the opportunity to set their learning goals, as well as learning goals for their teams, they keep developing themselves. Make your KLI's as important as KPI's. Some example KLI's as an inspiration: Innovation Projects Initiated: Tracks the number of new projects or initiatives started as a result of team brainstorming or problem-solving activities.
