1 Assess Situation

When you notice pushback from your team, take a step back and objectively assess the situation. Look for patterns in the resistance. Is it coming from a particular group or project? Understanding the root cause is vital. Consider whether your leadership style is too authoritative or perhaps not assertive enough for the dynamics of your team. Recognize that each individual may respond differently to your approach, and there might be underlying issues such as lack of clarity in roles, perceived unfairness, or personal challenges affecting their receptivity.

First principle of being a good leader is to be a good listener so if your team is being resistant to your leadership style, you need to listen to them for understanding the underlying issues behind the resistance. Once you know the issues, you may follow following steps: 1. Introspect 2. Evaluate what is wrong and how it can be changed 3. Practice the changed approach - one step at a time 4. Start listening regularly and take feedback constructively 5. Seek help from a leadership coach In the end, I strongly feel leadership is a journey and not a gift. Treat others the same way as you want to be treated and the biggest enemy of a good leadership is Ego, get rid of that.

Before even getting to the point of resistance, it is so important to understand each of your teammembers' styles. A quick interview and touchbase is enough - likes, dislikes, how they work best, etc... Often that can open the doors to communication and shows genuine interest in the team.

One approach towards all never works out. Gauging the individuals capability, seniority and dependability you need to calibrate your leadership style towards them. Some need handholding, others only broad directions and they will make their own path. So, as a leader assess what is the requirement of each of the team member and then adapt to that required style. Practice “situational leadership” as many a times even for a specific team member you may need to apply different styles of leadership and management styles depending on task at hand considering its complexity, priority, risk impact and experience of the team member. Always lookout for feedback and when needed adapt to the situation.

Implementing changes in your leadership style is just the beginning. To ensure lasting impact, you need to consistently reinforce the new approach. Acknowledge and celebrate small wins that result from these changes, and continue to solicit feedback to gauge how well the adjustments are being received. Ask for accountability checks, personal change is hard and it is easy to fall into old habits even when we are intentional about changing. Allow your team to hold you accountable, gently and professionally. This also fosters a good attitute to 360 feedback in the team as everyone is looking out for one another, rather than making it a finger pointing game.

It swiftly acquaints new leaders with the team's cultural norms and fosters a safe and intelligent feedback environment. Participating in it was gratifying, especially because it results in co-creating a set of rules of engagement for all team members to honor, which can be referenced if needed. Embracing this early in your leadership journey yields remarkable results. However, even if you missed it initially, there's always room for course correction. What truly counts is being humble and adaptable to finding the right balance for both you and the team.
