What do you do if your team is not prioritizing network security?

When addressing a team's neglect of network security, quick action is critical. Begin by explaining the importance of network security and highlight risks such as data breaches and malware attacks. Educate the team on security best practices, reinforce existing policies, and conduct thorough risk assessments. Escalate concerns to senior management as needed and ensure necessary changes are made. Implement strong security measures and foster a culture of continuous improvement. Network security is an essential part of infrastructure security of a company because the network is responsible for the communication between the client and server so if you are a service based company and you provide some remote services or SAAS then you have to be sure that there's not any vulnerability in the network because the network plays a crucial role in the infrastructure security.

If your team isn't prioritizing network security, it's like leaving the front door of your house unlocked while hoping for the best. It's important to emphasize that investing time and resources in securing your network is akin to safeguarding your valuable assets against potential threats and breaches.

For any organization, it's crucial to create an awareness and educating employees periodically about the importance network and access security. You can do this by highlighting potential risks and consequences, providing examples of security breaches in similar organizations, and offering solutions to improve security measures. Additionally, you might suggest implementing mandatory security training sessions or bringing in external experts to assess and reinforce the importance of network security.

Discipline is non-negotiable under my administration. Our teams are always ready. We have monthly assessments, drills and strategy formulation meetings to ensure we stay on top of our game. We have case studies and hands-on training for all levels in our organization. We have crisis plans which are ready to be activated as needed. There is not a single piece out of place in our defensive strategy.

By definition Risk= (threats*vulnerability). the Risk assessment starts with analyzing the organization asset registry. which enables to identify and prioritize critical assets . The next steps is to identify and analyzing the potential threats(internal&external) that could undermines those assets as well as the methods they use.as a result it enables us identify the potential vulnerabilities that exist in our assets.Based on the information gain above we could prioritize our risk and set mitigation options.

After increasing the overall awareness of the company you would need to assess the risks of the company. Find your vulnerabilities. I would start physical layer. Cover up unused port and interfaces, see if all doors lock and shut properly, check surveillance equipment, also see if there are any rogue cables, WAPs, or USBs. Then I would check the heat map see if our company WiFi can be accessed by an attacker outside of our building. Next use Seim tools like Splunk to monitor for threats. Then finally hire or have a company pen test your company to see what vulnerabilities you have so you can fix them.

Very first thing to educate people about risk assessment, vulnerability and accordingly we need to set the policy and develop in the same direction. By arranging training in whatever area we feel that these need to be trained . By utilisation and encourage then use to security tool and measure the security score and recommendations. Lastly we need to encourage them to have proper monitoring for the threat and vulnerability. This will definitely shift the mindset of people towards network security.

It is important to educate your team about the importance of network security. Highlight the fact that everyone has a role to play in maintaining security. Implementing clear network security policies is essential. Work with your team to develop guidelines that everyone must follow. These policies should cover password management, access controls, and the use of personal devices on the network, among other things. As a leader of the team, your responsibility is to take individuals with individual goals and priorities and move them to a cohesive team that has and supports team goals and priorities. What you are experiencing is likely a sign that you have not yet established a cohesive, high-performing team. As a leader, this is your problem, not an individual on your team. You need to figure out how to evolve your team from an immature one to a mature one. That does not mean you will never have conflict between a team priority and an individual one but it likely means that those conflicts will be more of an exception.

The security is nowadays is not an After-thought. Its has become a default and has to be put into consideration at every step of the service and product building. The best way to do it, is to train the staff and strengthen your bits in the chain. Security is not 100% but its about throwing as many hurdles as you can in the way of bad actors out there.

This helps keep them on their toes as now they know that any miss from their side will get directly escalated to you, and now their focus will be on reducing the number of times they are caught unprepared, when you highlight a possible event of concern. This approach ultimately helps the team realize the importance of being proactive, and this enables them to improve and grow individually.

This I would say is the most important step. You cannot properly secure a network by saying don’t open that phishy email. You have to use tools like firewalls such as the Next Generation Firewall that actively intercept and filters packets coming into the network. Use Seims such as Splunk to monitor and alert your analysts for threats. Use network packet capture tools like TCPDump and packet analysis tools like wireshark to analyze packets going in and out of the network. You can definitely tool if someone is trying to use a denial of service attack against you by seeing a lot of TCP SYN messages to you. Lastly, embrace AI and automation and see how it can revolutionize your network security team.

Provide Resources: Ensure that your team has access to the tools, resources, and support they need to implement effective security measures. This might include investing in security software, hiring dedicated security personnel, or outsourcing security services if necessary.

If my team isn't making network security a priority, I would start by showing them why it's crucial by using real-life examples.Then, I would make sure everyone understands how security fits into our bigger goals and get support from higher management if needed. We would set clear rules and procedures for security, to make sure everyone knows them, and have regular check-ups to see if they're working as expected. Most importantly, I would lead by example, always showing that security matters and making it part of our everyday routine.

We face so many threats at each layer, it can be hard to get all teams in sync, so a focused group can alleviate some of the burdon of multitasking.
