What do you do if your team members are resistant to your leadership?

Resistance is often a symptom of low trust in a relationship. I trust someone when in my communication with that person I feel seen, heard and understood. To increase my level of understanding, I need to learn to put focus on listening more, and perhaps listening different. Not listening to respond or to advocate my point of view but rather, listen to understand. Here's a few questions you may reflect upon to fine tune your listening: 1) What specific feedback have you received about your leadership style or decisions? 2) How well do you understand the goals, motivations, and challenges of your team members? 3) In what ways have you involved your team in decision-making processes, and how has their input been acknowledged and incorporated?

When faced with resistance from team members, it's essential to approach the situation with empathy, understanding, and a willingness to listen. Self-reflection: start by reflecting on your leadership style, communication methods, and decision-making processes. Honest self-assessment can help identify areas where adjustments may be necessary. Open communication: initiate open and honest conversations with the team members exhibiting resistance. Listen actively to their concerns, perspectives, and suggestions without judgment. Clarify expectations: clearly communicate your vision, goals, and expectations for the team. Ensure that each team member understands their role and responsibilities within the context of the broader objectives.

I would particularly aim at understanding the past. What has happened, whom have been leaders before, how are they perceived now. I would try to see if the employees are still attached and loyal to a past leader. Once I am able identify this person, I could make sure my attitude towards her/him is respectful.

Clear communication plays a very vital role.. as it can make things and on the other hand vice-a-Versa.. Always make sure that the person to whom you are communicating feels comfortable in expressing themselves

One thing I've found helpful is to give your team members a sense of ownership and autonomy. Involving them in decision-making process will prove beneficial. Empowering them can increase their engagement and reduce resistance.
