What do you do if your team lacks creativity in the workplace?

If my team seems to be lacking in creativity, I would set in place measures that encourage innovation. By encouraging open communication, brainstorming sessions, and regular idea-sharing. Providing opportunities for development in creative thinking techniques. I’d create a culture that celebrated failure but would benefit from the valuable lessons on the journey. Leading by example I’d encourage and embrace creativity of all team members and recognise and reward their creative contributions. It is only by encouraging collaboration and diverse perspectives can we bring a spark to a flat creative ensemble. As the head of the team, it’s on you to rub those sticks together to create the spark then fan the flames – hard.

Corporate Culture is really dictated by how people operate with each other. It's the rituals and behaviours that are celebrated and praised that determine how people will act. So, if you want more creativity, you need to give permission and create opportunities to do it. More so, find a way to publicly praise people just for trying. Having said that, instead of just trying to inspire creativity, focus on innovation. It will inspire all the creativity you're looking for, but have a more focused outcome.

Instilling Lateral thinking(aka divergent thinking) mindset is the key. I run a lot of leadership and productivity-related training and in every training I ask a lot of lateral thinking puzzles which will make the participants/employees think differently and outside the box. I have seen a lot of improvement in the employees thought process leading to them coming up with creative solutions for complex problems

Expose team members to diverse sources of inspiration and stimuli to spark creativity. This could include encouraging them to attend conferences, workshops, or cultural events, or providing access to creative materials, books, or online resources.
