What do you do if your team has skill gaps and you need to identify them?

To identify skill gaps in your team, start by reviewing each team member's skills and comparing them to their job requirements. Ask for feedback from managers, peers, and clients to pinpoint areas needing improvement. Look at performance data and consider future needs to anticipate gaps. Use skills tests or surveys to gather more information, and collaborate with HR for expertise and support. Once gaps are identified, work with team members to create personalized plans for improvement, providing training and resources as needed. By taking these steps, you can address skill gaps and strengthen your team's capabilities for success.

I find the best tool for this is to provide a "refresher" training on all job required skills, but having the team train you. This may be divided in months (e.g., January is the competency refresher for X, February for X etc.) This identifies inconsistencies firsthand, and it allows you to understand the reasoning behind it. Often we realize that gaps or deficiencies in the team come from the understanding of your own process, location, tools available. If the gap (end result) is noted across team members, the arrow points back at process. Either something is not clear or not feasible. In my experience, having visibility increases skill audit/compliance tremendously.

STEP 1:As a first step identify the list of skills required to perform the particular job in your team. Step 2: Next step is to find the Capability level for each skill for the particular job role to perform. Step 3: Evaluate your teams current Capability for this particular skills. Step 4: Basis result charter the learning program as per their skill competency and level. Step 5: Post their learning evaluate their Capability to understand the Progress.

Skill gap identification is the first & the most crucial step to employee development thus contributing to the overall organization performance. The following step by step approach can be used to identify skill gaps: 1. Draw an exhaustive Skill Matrix based on skills required for each role - Expected Skill Levels with precise measures/ratings 2. Training programs is the next step once this identified. This can be Inhouse or external trainings/ On job or off job trainings based on the nature of the job of the employee. We need to ensure that the routine work is not affected because of this. We will need to communicate the employees and they should not feel uncomfortable or fear that they may get exposed. They need to be given confidence that this is given to enhance their skill levels. Involving the departmental heads and other stakeholders is very essential to have the positive impact on this process. Byte size learning has been very effective. Todays generation wanting everything instant, short & effective this can help & will encourage them to participate & learn. Some other ways & means of Video based learning , coaching , business simulations, gamified learning can be the other technology based learning options which can be used by leaders for helping employees to scale up in their skill matrix.

Peer coaching or mentorship fosters an incredible collaborative learning environment that is then translated on excellent teamwork.

This is the traditional and valuable method which can be used because the employees will also have comfort level with the colleges whom them are working in day to day environment and easy to communicate what is needed out of them. This will help to share ideas, learn new skills and address problems in the workplace which will have mutual benefit to employer and employee.

We will need schedule the training Calender and align of trainings to arrest and reduce the skill gaps. We will need to develop a prior skill matrix chart and plot the employees against the skills and align them to move to the next level. We will need to involve the stakeholders ie department heads and supervisors to identify their needs and plan it accordingly. This should contains both short term and long term plans. This should also be communicated to the employee so that they will be aware and support the process initiated.
