What do you do if your team is facing unexpected challenges and setbacks?

Thereafter, it is the leader's responsibility to counsel the team members to do the task/assignment with more zeel and enthusiasm with an assurance that we will not leave it until it is not completed.

An outing like a retreat or an escape room or paint ball rooms are an interesting ways that create memories while simultaneously improving the connection that they have with each other. These types of events enhance creative problem-solving skills in a distinct way that can further contribute to the overall strength of your staff.

Rather than dwelling on the negative aspects, focus on how you can use this challenge to enhance skills, refine processes, or achieve better outcomes in the future. Consider what lessons can be learned from the setback and how they can be applied to prevent or overcome similar obstacles down the road. Assess your team's priorities and resource allocation in response to the challenge, reallocating resources as necessary to address critical needs and opportunities.

Ask them what supports and resources they need at this time and do your upmost to supply them. Acknowledging the difficulty of the situation is empty if you don't do something to help them overcome that difficulty! Make sure you listen, and give them the extra support they need.

Last year, my team faced delays due to unexpected regulatory issues. After overcoming these challenges, we conducted an After Action Review (AAR) to reflect on what happened versus what we had planned, why there was a difference, and how we could improve. This discussion highlighted our need for better contingency planning and communication. Through this process, we learned valuable lessons on adaptability and preparedness, turning a difficult situation into a constructive learning opportunity for future projects.

Identify opportunities for cross learning and collaboration within. Identify development opportunities to collaborate with outside of the team within the organization to help the team members to build new skills. In my experience, resilience is also a key factor when facing unexpected challenges and setbacks. As an example, one project I was involved in the team faced numerous obstacles. Instead of panicking, we viewed these as opportunities for growth. We reassessed our goals, adopted a growth mindset, and fostered more engagement among team members. After overcoming the obstacles, we reflected on our experiences and applied our learnings to future projects. This experience made us more resilient team. I think the thing to remember, after reading all of this good advice, is that ALL project teams will ALWAYS face unexpected challenges and setbacks. Acknowledging that right at the very beginning, with all the stakeholders, gives everybody a chance to discuss how we're going to approach these when they inevitably arise. What commitments is the team willing to make? What commitments are the leadership stakeholders willing to make? What commitments is the customer willing to make? If we can decide how we're going to BE with each other when these setbacks arise, it'll make it a lot easier to figure out what to DO in those inevitable moments. This is when we need the most resourcefulness and creativity. Let's make sure we can bring it!

LEAD BY EXAMPLE. Show them how you're approaching the situation. Share your concerns with them, as appropriate. And share with them how YOU are overcoming the challenge and getting motivated again. Show them how you are getting back into the work, going in its' new direction. And be visible.
