If your teaching style does not jive with your students and their learning style, you should change things up. For instance, find out more about them. Use a survey to find out what your students know and what they want to learn. Ask them how they learn best. Then plan for that. The teacher does not need to be the "sage on the stage". Of course you will have to give background notes on a topic but then plan for activities that help them learn and grow. Ask you students about which classes they feel successful in and why. Then go ask those teachers what their instruction looks like. It's even better if you can observe those students for a moment in a class where they feel successful - you will be amazed at how different those students appear in a different situation. I was as honest as I could be about different instructional strategies I was trying and why I was trying them. I often got great feedback from students and they were more willing to engage with strategies they didn't think would work when they saw me trying new things too.
