What do you do if your teaching methods are not preparing students for the future job market?

I belong to a structure where an individual cannot change the curriculum, however, there are a few things that I do to prepare my students. Integrating project-based learning, real-world simulations, and industry partnerships to provide authentic learning experiences. I also ensure that I stay abreast of changes in the job market and refine my teaching methods accordingly, ensuring students are well-equipped for future success.

In my experience, majority of the students who are opting for Post Graduate studies in the domain of Business Management are aspirants of joining the corporate world. The requirement of the the recruiters are mostly based on problem solving skills which are functions of critical thinking, ability to communicate effectively, spirit of team work and finally digital literacy. Unfortunately, the stereotype academic curriculum puts most of the emphasis on rote learning. Hence, the educators need to perform a tight-rope walk where the needs of both the worlds are met. The curriculum needs to be maneuvered to help the student secure good marks as well as make him employable. Good marks help to meet the gate criteria, so can't be ignored.

If current teaching methods are not adequately preparing students for the evolving job market, it is essential for educators to reassess and adapt their approaches. The future workforce will require skills that go beyond rote knowledge - students must develop critical thinking, problem-solving, technological literacy, and the ability to continuously learn and upskill. One approach is to prioritize project-based and experiential learning over traditional lecture formats. They should also promote autonomy and encourage their students to explore things on their own.

Keeping in mind the changing dynamics of the corporate environment and its ever evolving need system, the academic delivery mechanism needs to have a fluid like structure to be befitting. Changes in teaching practices should be initiated keeping in mind the needs of the students -- the potential future employees. The new pedagogies should incorporate more of hands-on learning via project work in teams which could be beyond the stipulated syllabus. This kind of task harnesses multiple skills, like -- no syllabus when we hit the shop floor, ability to think on our toes, coming out of comfort zones to work with strangers to inculcate the spirit of diversity & inclusion. The modified pedagogy should ideally motivate to know the unknowns.

We are witnessing a mega ongoing shift in the division of labor between humans, machines, and algorithms. This could pose a potential threat to displace a significant chunk of labor force in the future. Lots of new roles, which are acclimatized to the new task distribution system catalyzed by tech innovation, are going to emerge. Plethora of new opportunities are destined to blossom with own set of challenges. Hence, we need to find a panacea to survive in this changing context -- this will be a culmination learning, unlearning and relearning. A growth mindset backed by positive attitude should steer us to adopt the strategy of Life Long Learning to stay afloat and remain relevant. Key to achieve this goal is the mantra of self motivation.

Simply, we can shift to modern methods which can lead our students to the right road. We can follow the continuous assessment to see the effectiveness of each teaching method if it works well or not.
