Getting a promotion in corporate sometime need smart showcasing. In many cases you might be the expert in the topic but not expert in expressing the same. So learning the art of expressing is important. You also need to identify where and whom to talk to for effective recognition. Also you need to ensure the expertise you have is solving the issues your higher management or reporting manager is facing. If you can solve their problem with your expertise then that will help you in getting noticed and get the desired promotion.

Study ecological managerial economics and industrial ecology. This will give you the vocabulary (and perhaps some new ideas to make the "business case" for sustainability initiatives. It will also help you understand circumstances where the business case is simply too weak, and where absent any changes in the external incentive environment, sustainability initiatives are probably not going to get off the ground. In those latter cases, unless there are government initiatives like Pigouvian taxes, cap and trade schemes or direct regulation looming, or some customer mobilization for sustainability occurring, you are facing an uphill battle.
