What do you do if your superiors doubt your creative problem solving abilities?

Those above you in the pecking order, not vesting in your creativity while addressing company issues, typically change their minds through visible results. Expressing opinions offhand or without structure, say during a meeting or hallway chat, does not register in superiors minds as much from experience; so, take the initiative and look to present your solution in a powerpoint or spreadsheet to concisely and clearly detail the value of your approach to the solution, helping it standout and be taken seriously.

Focus on the work to the absolute best of your abilities. Present a professional appearance. Without parody, try to mirror the clients'/managers' speech patterns and body language so they'll see you as "one of them." Do not try to cozy up to them. This is a hard one. If they're determined to think you can't do the work, there isn't much you can do to prove them wrong, even if they are.

If my superiors doubt my creative problem-solving abilities, I would proactively seek opportunities to showcase my skills by volunteering for challenging projects, presenting innovative solutions during team meetings, and providing evidence of successful problem-solving instances from past experiences. Additionally, I would communicate openly with my superiors to understand their concerns and discuss ways to address them effectively.

You'll also foster a visible image of ambition and willingness to learn by listening and learning from these superiors. They'll reward you in turn by giving you time, attention and insight. There’s an old saying lawyers love to use: “Nothing beats live testimony”. If your colleagues or leaders doubt your ability to creatively solve problems, get to work and solve a lingering problem that’s negatively impacting your department or organization. Once you’ve proven your worth, you’ll win many of the doubters to your side. Remember this though: throughout your career you will run into people who simply won’t like you for whatever reason they want to trump up. No matter how hard you work, how many problems you solve, or lives you positively impact they will never believe in you. Believe in yourself and do the work to the best of your ability. You will be remembered by most as a champion. Move on from the haters.
