What do you do if your strategy isn't being effectively communicated due to poor active listening skills?

We keep assessing gaps in S&OP (Sales and Operations Planning). There may be gaps with the financial targets and there may be gaps in communication too. As S&OP is a highly cross-functional process, there are different interests, perspectives, experience, skills, and languages. The key is to understand the team members' perspectives and speak in their language. They will be engaged when they can see and understand their own benefit.

The problem with communication always lies with the communicator and not the communicatee. If your strategy isn't being effectively communicated it is NOT because of poor active listening skills, it is because of poor communication skills. I see one of two possibilities: 1. Your strategy is boring, unimaginative and uninspiring. Your audience switches off because the content does not engage them. 2. Your communication is boring, unimaginative and uninspiring. Your audience is bored before they even work out what your strategy is. Once you know which of those is the problem, you can start to fix it.

It is important to remember that even if listeners have problems with active listening, communication is not the task of the listeners. If you need to communicate the strategy to team members and you have difficulty doing so, it is not the team's problem. More often than not, the main problem is not that the team lacks active listening skills, but that the speaker is using a way of delivering and wording that is comfortable for the speaker and not for the listeners. If your team is not used to watching PP presentations, don't force them to familiarize themselves with the strategy in this way. Tell a story, make a video, use a creative approach.

Reinforcing success is huge. We want to encourage team members to ask clarifying questions and confirm understanding. We want them to be able to communicate what you said and share it with someone else. And it should be repeated frequently.

"What I am hearing you say is..." This is one of the best ways to test out active listening in the workplace and even in your personal life. Being genuinely interested in what the other person has to say to the degree you can repeat back and see if you hear it correctly is a superpower. Also, one of the best things we can do is say the things that might get us 'fired' so if you feel like you aren't being listened to...say it. Be open and honest, share it, and see. You might be surprised either way by the reaction.
