While I believe the question is very important, I disagree with the breakdown of “reality assessment”. The question highlights one crucial word: “skills”. Your skills to be specific. And thus the assessment is personal. Competency related. Are my skills good enough? Am I a fit? What happened? It is more so a self assessment approach where accountability is a key factor. This accountability is of course relevant to the strategist’s position. Is he an expert brought in to improve business performance or an in-house team player part of a hierarchy? If it is the latter, then feedback, appraisal, post strategy analysis and so forth are key. If it’s the former, it’s a different ball game.

It is very important to understand that a strategy might not work because of an unwillingness to cooperate. The feedback must include the “fit in” and “chemistry” factor. Personality traits become part of the assessment.

An example about strategy is the NBA dream team of the 1996 Olympics who lost its first training game to a group of university students. Dream team coach identified the reason as “big egos”. Enough to might not accept him as a coach even though they were highly professional and competitive. His strategy was not to coach them in this first game. Sure enough, egos clashed and they lost. It was a wake up call and, with a big appetite to win, they directly rectified. The next game was instrumental. Adherence to the coach and a single unit team. The university team barely scored. There’s no “I” in team. Ensure you create that single unit. Including yourself.
