What do you do if your speech needs maximum impact?

What is the purpose of the speech. Maximum impact is technically not possible. Do you want your speech to be received as heartfelt, passionate, and clear? That can be achieved. Someone could hate your speech but still say it was passionate. You have to decide before you get on stage that you will be honest, and your speech will be YOU, not some carbon copy of the latest trend. Stand on your message, stand on the belief that you are adding value. The impact will happen, I'd rather impact one person who can take action and change the world, rather than have a standing ovation from 2,000 people who felt nothing. Impact starts with you.

When it comes to delivering a speech that truly resonates, it's all about clarity of purpose. Before you even put pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard), take a moment to define your purpose. What's the heart of your message? What emotion do you want to stir? And most importantly, what action do you want to inspire? It's like setting the destination before starting a journey. With a clear purpose, your speech gains direction, focus, and impact. So, next time you're gearing up to speak, remember: know your purpose, and let it guide every word you say.

There should be only one overlying theme/point you are trying to make. You can make multiple points to support and clarify your overarching point, but when you attempt to make many points a speech can be less punchy and more confusing.

If we are talking about a speech versus a workshop or presentation, I would argue that the goal is to challenge how your audience views themselves, their organizations, or the world. I struggle with trying to do too much in my speeches. (Most other speakers I know do, too.) What's the main point? The ONE main point. Be clear. Challenge the status quo. The worst thing you can be in marketing and in speaking is boring.

Impact is not about delivering your message, but about answering the fears and deepest wishes of your audience. You made them learn something? Great, but not enough. How is your message changing their lives? If your message isn't doing so, in our modern infobesity and abundance of content, it will never resonate as it deserves to be.

Knowing audience needs becomes important to tailor the speech for them. Make it feel personalized and that can only happen when you understand their psychology and their needs. Once you understand what they're looking for, give them solid actionable take-aways. Whether those are tips that are to be executed in real life or are lessons to be remembered, make sure you say it in a way that it leaves an imprint on their mind. An effective speaker stays in the audiences' mind even after the communication is over!

Open with your hand raised and ask a yes/no question that most people would answer yes and raise their hand with you, with leading words like Have you ever… Preferably something that relates to your topic

Beware of the “boring PowerPoint habit” triggered often as soon as a speaker pulls up their title slide. The audience goes into sleep mode almost immediately, before they can even think: “Yet another boring PowerPoint”. If you want your idea to make a difference, you need to prevent that by doing things differently, in a style that’s both, true to your message and distinctly you. Ultimately, the purpose for your opening statement is to make your audience want to hear the next statement. If you send them into “boring PowerPoint mode” that can’t happen. Therefore, the crucial question is: What will spark your audience’s curiosity most? The more you know about their struggles and the desires, the more likely you are to nail that.

Tap into your audience's train of thought before transitioning into the material. So many speakers go to their slides or their autobiography first, then make room at the end for their audience. The audience comes first.

Think of it like building a sturdy house: you need a solid foundation to stand tall. Start with a bang in the introduction: lay out your purpose, give 'em a taste of what's to come, and establish your street cred. Then, dive into the meaty middle – the body. Here's where you unpack your main points with hard-hitting evidence, relatable examples, and persuasive arguments. Finally, wrap it up with a bow in the conclusion: recap your key points, remind 'em why it all matters, and send 'em off with a rallying cry. Remember, a well-structured speech isn't just easy on the ears – it's a roadmap to success. So, next time you're gearing up to speak, stick to the script and watch your message soar!

Whether I'm writing a book or a speech, I always start with a comprehensive outline. What's my thesis? What are my supporting points? What stories, analogies, or data will I use to support each point? What is my transition between sections? Before I started writing my book, my outline was 27 pages long. Not everyone I know works like this, but if I spend the time to craft a comprehensive outline, not only does it make my writing more efficient by decreasing the time it takes for me to get "in the flow" each time I sit down, it ensures my Big Idea has a through-line from beginning to end.

But remember, it's not just about the words – it's how you deliver 'em that counts. Channel your inner performer and let's talk delivery. First up, your voice – clear, confident, and full of zest. Next, lock eyes with your audience – show 'em you're in it together. Use those hands to emphasize your points, stand tall with swagger, and let your face tell the story. Oh, and don't forget to throw in a smile or two – it's contagious, trust me. So, when you hit that stage, own it. Speak loud, speak proud, and watch the magic happen. You've got this!

This is the biggest lesson I learned from my 7-month Heroic Public Speaking course was the rehearsal process. The rule of thumb is one hour of rehearsal for every minute of your speech. I love this quote from Michael Port. "If you aren't willing to rehearse, then it's unlikely that you get better. And if you already think that you are as good as you can be, then you are probably missing out on opportunities."

Practice makes perfect. Seriously, there's no substitute for putting in the reps. Practice 'til you can do it in your sleep. And here's the secret sauce: get feedback. Whether it's from your reflection in the mirror, your trusty recorder, a pal, or even a seasoned coach – soak it in. Embrace the good, tackle the bad, and watch yourself soar. Remember, every stumble is a chance to grow, every stumble is a step closer to greatness. So, keep practicing, keep refining, and when that big moment comes, you'll be ready to knock it out of the park. Go get 'em!

Listen for the right feedback. How did the audience feel? Were there any confusing terms? Did you leave any loose ends in your story? So many people are quick to say "You should." You are not required to obey! Be polite, not obedient.

The end what people will remember the most, so be memorable. Finish with a CTA, an impactful quote or a strong message.

When you have an audience that does not hold your point of view, remember the old saying "A man convinced against his will, is of the same opinion still." Don't go straight, think of an angle and finally let people make the final conclusions. Facts don't change minds anyway.
