1 Understand the criteria

Before you start writing your self-assessment, make sure you understand the criteria and metrics that your organization uses to measure your performance as a systems engineer. 2 Be honest and realistic

When you write your self-assessment, be honest and realistic about your achievements and challenges as a systems engineer. Don't exaggerate your accomplishments or downplay your difficulties. Instead, provide concrete examples and evidence of how you applied your skills and knowledge to deliver value and quality to your customers and stakeholders. You should also highlight the areas where you improved your performance, learned new skills, or took on additional responsibilities. At the same time, you should acknowledge the areas where you faced challenges, made mistakes, or encountered obstacles, and how you overcame them or learned from them.

We bring our own biases into almost every situational assessment we engage in as human beings. As engineers and technology experts, we may also lack some degree of self-awareness (introversion, intellectual focus, etc). Step 1 is to track and analyze your own performance with measurements - what was accomplished, was my work timely, etc. Step 2 is to get that feedback from peers and trusted advisors to learn how you are doing from 3rd party perspectives. Step 3 - actively engage on the subject routinely with your supervisor!! Understand any conflicts between your assessment and those of others. Dig in to better understand, but don't push back automatically.

3 Seek feedback and input

One of the best ways to improve your self-assessment as a systems engineer is to seek feedback and input from others who are familiar with your work and performance. This may include your supervisor, peers, customers, or other stakeholders. You can ask them to share their opinions, observations, and suggestions on how you performed as a systems engineer, what you did well, what you could improve, and how you can grow and develop your skills and competencies. It’s better to face the truth and work on weak items. That’s the whole point of engineering in the first place. We find solutions to scenarios and make them work. If there’s weak items in my own personal assessment, it is my responsibility to work out Solutions. I could include that information in my assessment and let my superior know that I realize my own situation and that I am working on it.
