What do you do if your salary negotiation skills are not improving despite using online tools?

Honest evaluation and self reflection comes at a cost. The cost is Precision. Because we can't evaluate our self without some sort of projection or bias. One of the best ways to identify your Strengths and weaknesses is to base them off of other's feedback. sometimes we are blind to our weaknesses, no matter what they are. Outside voices may serve as a reminder of our blind spots. The more you communicate with others and provide as well as receive feedback in a constructive manner, the more you will thrive.

The best way to find your way to the negotiation table is to find a mentor or a partner in dime! Someone you can easily say that they have your best interest in mind and would give you honest feedback or criticism. I found that colleagues that I've developed a fruitful relationship with that is based on cooperation made sure to give me a good feedback on my skills and what is lacking that may be needed in case I wanted to show up to the negotiation table fully loaded. I would ask them for data sets. One includes other departments approximate salaries and their variance. From there I would know the range in which a position has wiggle-room in. For example, if an IT tech support has both 500 and 550 in salary variance, then it's at 10%. GL

I used to be oblivious to the aspect of salary negotiations. I always thought that the company had my best interest in mind. Alas not, companies are made to reduce costs and increase profit. you're a cost that needs to be reduced. Keep that in mind. Whatever offer comes out your way, be sure it's almost the bare minimum. A good rule of thumb is to increase your initial offer by 15-25% based on position. the higher it is the more bargaining room there is as higher positions have more variability in skill, market rate and value. If you find yourself negotiating on a managerial level, make sure to increase that initial offer wiggle room by an extra 15%! Good luck.

Online tools are just that. a "tool". and it's up to you to interpret them based on your experience, education, environment and preconceived notions. some tools may give you a regional evaluation while others may give you a broad one. Be careful when using broad ones as they are not a good metric. Best way to assess your worth is to base it off of someone else in your own field with similar history, educational and professional background.
