What do you do if your remote colleagues are hard to connect with?

Been There, Done That :-) The following points were the key factors for a successful collaboration: We set clear expectations around communication channels, response times, etc. I always promoted a culture of open communication. We scheduled regular check-ins via collaboration platforms (virtual meetings & Teams group chat) to discuss the workload, challenges, and overall status. I encouraged all team members to proactively share updates, and ask for help/support. I did my utmost to be approachable at any time for the team to support them with genuine interest, and to find the most optimal solution for any challenge. Last but not least, Always Recognize and Appreciate! Acknowledging team's achievements and contributions are invaluable.

Any Sensible person will always be responsive ( either immediately or near future). For the only reason it is a human instinct of FOMO. On the contrary very few non responsive people will Knowingly or unknowingly pave the way to be eventually subtracted from the team, group or organisation or a community. Sometimes it is better to leverage On others FOMO to avoid catastrophe/s in the work environment. It is OK to commit small wrongs to avoid blunders. Applying the time quadrants for communication is also one of the effective ways to achieve better communicative results.

Micromanaging oneself is better than ON others. Observe and understand the trend and the style of communication of self and colleagues' and the time taken to respond or act. Align to get what is necessary to achieve fruitful results. This is one of the most useful ways to avoid conflicts during critical situations largely.

Either this is the case or lack of training or lack of willingness. Lack of training can be handled by creating daily touch points, putting reminders, creating an open environment to communicate freely, encourage others to participate in training which could help them grow. In case of lack of willingness, a warning followed by reporting to HR. Few years ago, I was trying to reach a new team member who was transferred to me from another leader. After multiple attempts, he picks up the phone mistakenly while sleeping. He was WFH during the time and so was I. I invited this individual to office and spent time with him, very soon he became one of the star performers. Sometimes few encouraging words here and there can help someone shine.

Ask if they are experiencing technical problems. If not, inform them of the issue if it has been on-going. Remind them that remote work is a privilege, not an employment right and a continued problem may result in the privilege being revoked.

Meet them in person. Remote is amazing and it’s helped so many employees design a life they’d rather live and it’s positively impacted revenue (see flex index’s research for evidence). I am a remote advocate, But the best way to connect with colleagues is in person.So, if you’re struggling to connect remotely then meet them in real life. Foster the relationship, build trust and connect in person so that your virtual relationship works better. It’s doesn’t have to be either or, it can be both.

First approach is to schedule regular communication or virtual meetings to provide opportunities for interaction and updates. Some people simply do not want to connect on a personal level. You should probably accept that and move on if they are delivering results. IT, and especially remote IT, often attracts people who consider themselves introverts.
