What do you do if your project is falling behind schedule?

These are the things you'd want to take note of where the issue were: - Initial goals vs imeline mismatch. - Scope creep, extra requirements. - Scope creep, ambiguous initial goals. - Unusual implementation delays. - Acceptance criteria usage. It can be in multiple buckets, idea is to know what happened so we stop doing that from now on.

Falling behind schedule is never pretty, but the project team members must assess their situation and environment. Critical path will generally be known and everyone will focus on it, but the project's adjacent environment is what everyone forgets about. Call it tunnel vision, but your critical path is NOT the only critical path you are dealing with. Look at projects adjacent to you (Adjacent in time/space/resourcing/funding etc) and check for their critical paths and their impact on you.

Out of schedule, there some factors to consider. Availability of materials, lack of supévision, skilled & unskilled not suitable in their performance. Old fashion of technical methodology. Reschedule & Double time, make time extension of works. With regards to our personnel. Trained them again.

Some things to look at: - Prioritise the goals - Try to strip down deliverables to MVP - Opt for smaller functional teams, if they are big. - Look at resolving implementation issues. Work with stakeholders on these things from the start.

Once you have a clear view of all projects adjacent to you and their critical paths, check if the current project goals are viable or not. There may be overlaps or constraints that weren't apparent before. This will obviously delay the project, but when the goals and constraints are clear, the project has a higher probability of being completed successfully.

Regular checkins are a must, not to see if team members are working, but to see if there are any blockers that we can help them with. And also that what we are working on is priority. Also, keep checking with the initial list of problems to make sure we are not repeating the mistakes.

This is important. Whenever there is a project delay you have to call out the reason for the delay clearly that all project stakeholders/sponsors know whats happening. Communication is always key. Especially when you are dealing with a complex environment of multiple projects with multiple critical paths.
