What do you do if your project deadlines are overwhelming your work-life balance as a data engineer?

Managing work priorities and personal life balance relies on good planning, open communications, shared responsibilities (at work and in the family) and assessing top priorities consistently. One of my personal practices was integrating my work and family obligations calendars. Knowing ahead and in advance the critical project steps, and my family’s (children) needs. Having a contingency plan, delegation and team work are essential. Definitely when foreseeing issues, escalate to management and work alternatives to get back on track. Likewise use a family support structure to help out if needed. Planning ahead and being proactive are key to success at both fronts - it’s doable.

Start by communicating openly with your manager or project lead about the challenges you're facing. Together, prioritize tasks, set realistic deadlines, and discuss potential solutions to manage your workload effectively. Break down large projects into smaller, manageable tasks, and consider delegating or collaborating with teammates to lighten the load. Implement time management techniques to organize your workday efficiently, and set clear boundaries between work and personal time. By taking proactive steps and advocating for your well-being, you can maintain a healthier work-life balance while still meeting project deadlines effectively

If deadlines are unrealistic, communicate this early to stakeholders, proposing adjustments or seeking additional resources. An example script for streamlining data validation might be a Python script that uses the Pandas library to automatically clean and validate a dataset. This script could: Load data from various sources (CSV, databases). Check for and handle missing values (e.g., impute with the mean or median, or remove rows/columns). Validate data formats (e.g., dates in YYYY-MM-DD, numbers within a specific range). Remove or correct outliers based on predefined rules. Generate a log file reporting any issues found and actions taken.

I would start by defining and communicating your work hours to your team and employer, ensuring you're available for critical tasks while preserving personal time. Use technology wisely to segregate work notifications from personal ones, perhaps through different devices or apps. Negotiate with your employer about flexible or remote work arrangements if your job nature allows, enabling you to adapt work commitments around your personal life more seamlessly.

Here's the truth: Nobody will congratulate you if you start putting over hours. People will expect it as a part of your duties. You need to communicate priorities and boundaries with your manager. You will often find nobody expects you to spend more time than you need to. If you are not looking for yourself, nobody else will. If too much is on your plate, you must drop some priorities or hire more people. It's not your job to work all the time. But it is your job to communicate risks.
