If my programming project requires efficient data structures, I would do: - Understand the requirement and specific needs - choose the most suitable data structure that fits the requirement efficiently, I'll do more research if needed like, I will evaluate the time and space complexity for the data structure i choose to ensure this will be the best of it - I'll implement it in the program on the project - do the testing and evaluate performance - optimize the program, or data structure if necessary. repeat this achieve best of it. To be honest, I do not perform all the steps in all cases, in some i choose to skip the evaluation of the selected data structure.

Unless you are working on something that really needs crucial performance requirements, you should be looking at what is easy to read, maintain and gets the job done in a reasonable fashion without any crazy complexity. Usually I come up with multiple solutions. A problem can often have multiple solutions. For example, if i go with binary search tree, worst case would be unbalanced tree. Ultimately, it might not be the optimal solution. Here we can use HashMap with key value if data size is less. It would be very fast comparing than BST. insert, get, remove method is just O(1). Hence, It's okay to consider simpler solutions first. Thread-safe implementations are ok when concurrent operations are required. while storing value on a HashMap or any other at same time may lead to access error. So we have to use concurrent elements. Even we can think about message queues if you have this requirement.

Stick to well-known ways of doing things. If you're using a binary search tree, keep it balanced for best search times. If you're dealing with lots of things happening at once, make sure your data structures can handle it. Therefore, it is always better to dig deep, learn, earn and move on.

In code we may use if, else if, else or may be in nested way. Here we can try to get all checks in one line if possible. if we just checks a variable contains, go with switch statement simply. To check Time and Space, can use profilers (Cpython, JavaVirtualVM) to watch out memory and space occupancy and which method takes larger number, processing data size. With these data, can optimize the code.

I can give you a simple tip on this phase since the availability of AI tools getting high, You can use an AI tool to get the code optimized but it is not highly recommended since the AI also can get wrong and the developer will end up with a lack of knowledge. but you should use them present day to get an idea if you are stuck.

There will always be edge cases hitting your code which will be hard to be speculated when the code was written for the first time. If not edgecases different developers have different coding styles which sometimes lead to redundant code of lines , inefficient codes implementations and many more all the reason where refactoring is required. This becomes a major issue in very big applications like legacy systems where code is lying for 10-20 years and hundreds of people have worked on the same codebase over the time.
