What do you do if your professional reputation takes a hit?

Reputation is developed via consistent demonstrations of technical expertise and ethical behaviour. If your reputation is under threat, the goal is to maintain your dedication to quality and the highest standards. You can gradually restore the trust of your peers and clients by working diligently, precisely, and in accordance with engineering best practices. A mechanical engineer's genuine worth is judged not in words, but in deeds that demonstrate professionalism and everlasting dedication to the craft.

Why is it important to own up to your mistakes? This shows that you are not perfect, but you aspire to reach as close to it as possible. You understand what is missing, what needs to be corrected, and hopefully, that you will not make the same mistake again. My philosophy is: Mistakes will always lead you to a better way. Mistakes are humbling, learn from them and short enough, you will learn to avoid them all together.

The best communication strategy is to: 1) Speak to the scenario, matter of factly 2) Own your role in it, as well as your intended purpose and methodology to share your good intentions 3) What you've learned as a result, including feedback from others 4) (optional) Invite additional feedback in a specific form (eg email, private conversation, tell me now) 5) Say "Based on this" and then what you'll do differently moving forward And always end with a thank you!

Nothing teaches better then experience, but is others experience a good lesson for you? Same principle applies to books. I'll let you decide. But never force your experience onto others. That can create a backlash that will defeat the whole porpoise. If you know someone is heeding in the wrong direction, basset on the experience you have on the matter, make it known to them what the outcome might be and let that person decide what to do next. As an extra step, you can offer your help but only if it's appreciated. If the offer is not accepted, the discussion on that subject is over. It's better to let someone fail, doing it their way to help them understand what to avoid next time.

We all make mistakes, best thing we can do is own them so we can learn and grow from them. But what happens when you do everything right and still suffer because of someone else mistake. This is a difficult place to be in. Your sense of justice is driving you to correct what was wronged and this can cloud your judgement to the point of doing more damage to your reputation than the initial mistake. My best advice to you is to try and work around it. I'm not saying to accept the mistake as your own, that might take more than you can give at that time. Concentrate on reducing the damage that the issue created. 90% of the time the truth will come out and you will gain more from not reacting. 100% of the time you will learn something important.
