I can say from my own experience that your background can be very useful in UX for different reasons. First, the soft skills you can learn from previous experiences are key. Secondly, UX is comprised of different areas such as psychology, business, technology, etc. which means you can bring many of your learnings from your background into your UX role. In my case, I studied social work and worked for a few years as a social worker, which has provided me with a different perspective on users. In my opinion, one of the greatest assets of UX teams is seeing so many different backgrounds that bring different skills.

I come from an ECE background and I was recently working with a client in iOT, my experience working with iOT helped me better resonate with the client and as I knew how the tech works and what can be done, it opened up new ways of brainstorming and the final product was much meaningful. This is actually an added benefit. For example I was working at an Airline for their User Experience where I met people from various departments. I spoke to someone who used to be a cabin crew and ended up being some high position in UX/Digital. It was a great example because she was able to use her knowledge and ground experience and now bring that in to digital customer experience. Same way you can do the same, even if you dont have relevant industry you can still apply from your ground experiences to the digital.
