What do you do if your presentations or workshops as a business coach are falling flat?

Understanding your audience is crucial, but equally important is having a clear vision of what winning looks like for your presentation or workshop. As a business strategy coach, I often use focus groups of past and existing clients to test new offerings before presenting them to new clients or prospects. This not only gives me valuable feedback but also helps me align my content with the audience's expectations and needs. Remember, the ultimate goal is to create a conversation that inspires growth and leads to rewarding results.

Before any engagement you should be able to confidently answer 4 questions: Who is the audience? What are they looking to get out of this presentation? How will I deliver it? And I always add a 4th, "What do I want out of this presentation?" I believe in win-win scenarios so it must be clear what all parties will gain. Starting with these, will help drive everything you do to a successful outcome.

This happened to me the first time I gave a presentation, and it was a disaster, I really wasn't prepared, I wasn't prepared to be questioned, I wasn't emotionally prepared, and it was very hard. I faced my own ignorance. I learned a lot from that first interaction, so much so that today I don't consider it a failure, it was an enormous learning experience. I learned that being questioned is the best thing that can happen to you, that when I don't know something, have the humility to recognize that I don't know, and take care of learning for the future. If you keep the word failure, you are not ready for this path yet. There are no failures, they are only learning.

Conocer la audiencia es fundamental, incluso si no se tiene acceso a información certera sobre sus gustos y preferencias. Incluir temas generales, dinámicas ayuda a dise?ar el contexto y que los participantes se vean motivados a participar. Temas tales como comunicación efectiva, coordinación de acciones entre otros, son temas comunes a cualquier tipo de audiencia que despiertan el interés y muchas veces disparan otros temas que hacen que toda la audiencia se interese y participe. Cómo coaches buscamos despertar conciencia y que sea el mismo equipo el que traiga desde la transparencia el problema y sea también parte de la solución.

Hay dos aspectos claves para tener engagement en tus presentaciones: Una, sí, conocer a tu audiencia. Dos, conocer bien tu propuesta de valor. Si logras hacer esa match entre ambas, va a ser realmente difícil que no conectes con tus clientes. Por otro lado, hay tres premisas de aprendizaje bajo las que dise?o todas mis presentaciones. ?Cuáles? 1) La gente aburrida no aprende, dicho por Carl Rogers. 2) El movimiento corporal es la puerta de entrada al aprendizaje, de Paul Denisson y 3) El aprendizaje es directamente proporcional a la diversión que se obtiene de Bob Pike. Siempre que incorporo elementos que se derivan de esas premisas en mis presentaciones, se incrementa de forma exponencial las probabilidades de éxito de las mismas.

Having a well-organized presentation is beneficial. However, recognizing the diverse ways in which audiences comprehend information is crucial for ensuring an engaging learning experience. Some individuals learn best through visual cues, others through auditory information, and still others through tactile experiences or a combination of these methods. How you incorporate these elements can significantly impact the effectiveness of your presentation.

Mantener estructura en la presentación y un para qué ( objetivo ) bien definido nos permitirá un espacio agradable y un entorno confiable para el aprendizaje.

Todos los conferenciantes, speakers, facilitadores, coaches, tenemos un hilo conductor que sirve de estructura para hacer el delivery de nuestro mensaje. Esta especie de esqueleto constituye la columna vertebral que sostiene toda nuestra oferta y propuesta de valor. Pero es el esqueleto nada más. Hay que construir "músculo" alrededor de esa columna vertebral que le de fuerza al mensaje que queremos comunicar. ?Cómo hacerlo? De la única forma que se puede hacer: ejercitándose en las rutinas que impacten a tu audiencia. En mi caso, lo logro generando momentos GUAO que encanten a mi audiencia. Y lo hago en tres tiempos: Un primer momento ?Ah? que desconcierta, un segundo momento ?Ahhhh! que clarifica y un tercer momento ?Ajá! que aterriza.

I have learned over the 40+ years of speaking that it is a privilege and there is never any excuse for not being prepared. Plan ahead and assume the worst will happen. As for the actual presentation, do NOT kill your audience with a PowerPoint that goes into excruciating detail with small unreadable font. Never have more than 3 or 4 words or thoughts on a slide. KISS. The audience wants to hear practical, honest and unbiased information from you, not an infomercial or commercial. Respect their time and know who they are in advance. Do your homework and come prepared to get them involved, by asking THEM questions and weave the answers into your presentation. Knowledge is power but only when shared. It is your job to share!

El mejor método interactivo que conozco para generar participación de los asistentes es involucrarlos a ellos dentro de la presentación. Si bien es importante contar con diversos recursos que hagan tu workshop más ágil, más dinámico, la clave -a mi modo de ver- radica en la posibilidad de brindarle a los asistentes ser parte integral de la misma. Los recursos de apoyo a tu presentación contribuyen a que la misma tenga soporte para reforzar algunas ideas; sin embargo, es el mensaje que transmites y la manera como lo transmites lo importante porque los participantes están allí para escucharte, porque tienes algo importante que decirles y si los involucras dentro del discurso tienes el mejor método interactivo del que dispones.

Again, there have been times where I swear Murphy (law) has followed me around when I speak. I always assume that something will go wrong, and you can never plan ahead enough. How? Always take a backup set of your entire presentation with you on a USB stick and test it BEFORE you speak. Simple as this sounds, get to the venue hours early and make sure the sound works, etc. and also that when possible, the AC is not so cold as to freeze the attendees. Worse, nothing kills a presentation faster than a room that is sweltering hot. Make sure you deal with these in advance. Finally, respectfully ask ALL to turn off their cell phones before you speak. Most will ignore you so your job is simple: be so good that they will once you start!

La flexibilidad ante los imprevistos es parte del proceso del coach. Establecer confianza a través de la sinceridad durante el inconveniente ayuda a involucrar a la audiencia en la posible solución ( por ejemplo ante un desperfecto técnico). En caso de tener la necesidad de adaptar el contenido ya sea por temas relevantes traidos por la misma audiencia, aprovechar los disparadores que impactan en la audiencia referidos a comentarios o devoluciones son fuentes de oportunidades en estos procesos de aprendizaje mutuos: siempre debemos recordar que tanto el coach o facilitador, así como las personas en la audiencia aprenden en este contexto.

Como se?alaba en un comentario anterior, el "músculo" que hay que formar alrededor del "esqueleto" para soportar nuestra propuesta de valor y fortalecer la calidad de nuestras presentaciones, se desarrolla con ejercicio. Así que la práctica constante es la mejor manera de desarrollar tus habilidades y tus competencias al momento de hacer el delivery de tus servicios, tu pitch comercial, o alguna presentación, algún workshop, etc. ?Qué te sugiero? ?Muéstrate! Exponte. Participa de grupos de networking y hazte oferta. Ofrécete para dar alguna charla, conferencia, que te permita probar cómo funcionas con el público. Y pídeles luego feedback e incorpora las sugerencias. De alguna manera, supón que estás - como los standupers- probando material.
