What do you do if your passion for educational technology starts to wane?

Revisit your initial motivations and goals for pursuing a career in educational technology. Reflect on the positive impact you can have on student learning and educational outcomes.

I often think about the scale of the problem we are trying to solve. We are teaching people to think, evaluate and create. I can hardly imagine a bigger challenge. That really inspires me to go on.

Connect with peers, mentors, or an online community in EdTech. Share your experiences and hear theirs. They may have ideas or perspectives that help. If the situation is deeply affecting your mood or well-being, consider speaking to a therapist who can help process your feelings and develop coping strategies.

Educational technology is a vast field. Investigate a different aspect – perhaps instructional design, game-based learning, or adaptive technology tools pique your interest. Take a course, attend a workshop, or work on a side project to gain fresh expertise. This can spark a renewed sense of excitement.

Signal to your team that you're looking to try new things. It might be a new training topic, a new skillset, like becoming more involved in development instead of just design, or working on an internal initiative .

Try to pinpoint why you're feeling less passionate. Is it burnout, boredom with specific tasks, lack of challenge, or changes in your interests? Think about what initially drew you to EdTech. Do those values still align with your current goals? Are you still excited by the potential impact?

As a life-long learner be ready to pivot at a moments notice. If you are being real with yourself it is time to add to what you already have in your toolbox. Never give less than your best at every turn. Seek out new technologies to become proficient in. Share what you know!

It's normal for passions to ebb and flow over time. If your enthusiasm for educational technology is declining. Interests change over time, that's perfectly normal. If you're truly and consistently unhappy, a career change might be the right path. Don't feel pressured to stay in a field that no longer serves you.
