What do you do if your organization is undergoing significant changes and you're an engineer?

My philosofy is always embrace the changes. Embrace the change with an open and positive mindset. Changes often push us beyond our comfort zones, which is essential for personal and professional growth. Focus on maintaining the quality and timeliness of your deliverables amidst the transition.

I would try to thoroughly understand the nature and scope of the changes happening within the organisation. This could involve attending town hall meetings, reading internal communications, and speaking with my manager and other leaders to get a clear picture of what is happening, why it is happening, and how it might impact my role and the work I do.

In today's world with advanced technology, adaptability and being open to changes are crucial more than ever in almost all industries. It might be organizational changes due to new requirements or it can be technical changes that you need to update your skills, in all cases, engaging positively would open you the doors to achieve your goals. From my experience, this is the exact reason that expedite my first promotion in my company.

I would proactively start adapting my work practices and upskilling where necessary. This could involve learning new technologies, processes, or ways of working that align with the organisational changes. I would also make sure to stay up-to-date with any new training or development opportunities made available by the company.

Change brings problems that are new and unveils problems that company already have but nobody bothers to solve and decides to live with them. More problems mean more opportunities to bring value to the company and position yourself to higher levels. Offering solutions and creating value for the company will end up increasing your value in the company. (it would be easy to solve existing problems since you probably know what is causing the problem, using the motivation and willingness to change.)

I would make sure to maintain open and transparent communication with my manager, team, and other stakeholders. This would involve providing regular updates on my progress, seeking feedback, and collaborating to find ways to navigate the changes successfully. I would also be proactive in reaching out to colleagues across the organisation to share knowledge and best practices.

Networking, often mis-perceived as fawning in its extremes, is the key to be known by the key characters of the company especially during significant changes. In my previous role, we had a new manager assigned to our team recently. In one of our one to ones, he was sharing his ideas on individuals and their potentials in my team. I was surprised when he did not mention the high performer in my team at all. The reason behind his first impression is exactly the lack of networking. The high performer did not interact with new manager at all, while others had built network and had spent some with the new manager.

During significant changes, people would look for doers. When the change is needed, I would not spend my time with the ones who think something is not possible. I would get together with the ones who are positive and who believes making something happen. Being positive always open the doors, even the doors that you are not aware of and you need to pass.
