What do you do if your organization lacks effective knowledge sharing and collaboration?

This is a real challenge. We must ask why there is no knowledge transfer. I have found for some organizations this should be part of the portfolio of projects and strategic planning. We must reason this out carefully.

It's essential to start by assessing the current state of collaboration within the company to understand why there is a lack of proper collaboration or knowledge transfer. Often, this stems from a culture of non-collaboration, a lack of trust, and a fear of someone else taking credit for one's work. The most effective approach to address this is to cultivate an environment of collaboration where employees are focused on the bigger picture. I have observed in many organizations that this non-collaborative culture is often instilled by senior management, who form groups or factions within the company. Encouraging open communication, with measures in place to ensure fair credit sharing, is crucial for building trust.

As consultants, we are unable to participate in this type of training without close collaboration with the Human Resources department. While consultants can identify and address these challenges, they cannot effect change single-handedly. Furthermore, if the matters at hand under a consultant's purview pertain to sensitive issues that could potentially harm internal stakeholders, it is understandable that employees might not be fully engaged.

Many times we implement an idea but we do not really measure the success. For me I must look at the benefits and if it was achieved. I would timelime when and if it can be measured partially at different points.

When I owned my company, we built knowledge sharing in from the beginning, with it baked into several metrics. It won't work as well as a standalone program. An example - one year during our yearly summer gathering we had each project setup booths (sort of like a grade school science fair) to share lessons learned from their projects. Everyone had to go around and get their cards stamped by visiting booths and listening to the presentations. Our employees said things like - "we would have never thought we could learn something from 'x' project, but we have several takeaways we can bring to our client".

Most do by default. Any collaboration or information sharing is going to take at least one person who is extremely committed to the cause. They'll also need buy in from as high up the chain as they can go. Unless the culture of the company is right, it may be impossible. If so, you'll have to do a lot of culture work to make it possible. Seek out the advice of anybody who will listen. Ask them very specific questions like. " How would knowledge sharing and collaboration with others in the company help you do your job better ? " If they say " It wouldn't. ", ask them why?
