What do you do if your Office Administration internship doesn't lead to full-time employment?

There's no wasted effort in pursuing an Office Admin internship. Many companies are eager to welcome you and offer attractive salaries. Consider the following to enhance your career prospects during the internship: 1) Take professional skills seriously. Use the internship as a golden opportunity to learn various skills required in office administration roles. The competencies you acquire will greatly enhance your career prospects. 2) Obtain certifications and training. To further boost your profile and increase your bargaining power, pursue relevant certifications and training in office administration. These credentials will make you more competitive in the job market.

If my Office Administration internship doesn't result in full-time employment, I'd leverage the experience gained to enhance my resume and professional network. I'd request feedback from supervisors to identify areas for improvement and enhance future job prospects. Additionally, I'd actively seek new opportunities through job postings, networking events, and career fairs. Volunteering or freelancing in related roles can also help me gain additional experience and increase my chances of securing a permanent position.

First of all, it is important to understand that an internship is unique opportunity for learning outside of academic settings. It is not a probationary period for managers to get the time time to observe you as a new hire, gauge your performance, and determine early on whether you are suitable for a long-term position. So, treat your internship as an opportunity to learn outside the class where you development and learn new skills and explore your field (or other careers). After you are done with your internship don't expect to be hired, but if you are hired, you are lucky. If you don't get hired, it is a loss to them. Go out and get a job where your knowledge, skills, and expertise are valued/needed.

An internship as an office administrator can be quite tasking and strenuous, so take a deep breath and do some major self reflection. List our the various unique skills you've developed, experience, achievements and possibly, any area you may wish to improve. This will surely equip you in tabling your value to potential employers in the nearest future. Another very important activity soon after is to gather feedback from your former supervisors, people you looked up to (mentors or advisors) and colleagues. This feedback will help you ascertain your strengths and weakness; which will be areas for improvement. In turn, you will grow personally and professionally.

A stint at John Holt (a major conglomerate in Nigeria) as an administrative assistant was supposed to lead to a full-time employment but unfortunately, that was not the case. I reckon this was where I learnt how to multi-task most effectively and efficiently, how to operate various office machines, how to use spreadsheets and data entry software, word processing and presentation. I also acquired skills in Customer relations management. It turned out that role adequately prepared me for my next job with an NGO: National Association of Small and Medium Scale Industrialists, which I must mention I got through a recommendation from my former Boss, the General Manager at John Holt.
