What do you do if your mentor-mentee relationship in leadership development is not working?

Begin by beginning an open and honest conversation with your mentor or mentee about your issues and potential solutions. Clarify expectations, responsibilities, and goals to achieve agreement and understanding. Seek input from both sides to discover areas for improvement and modify your strategy accordingly. If the problems remain despite your efforts, try seeking different mentors or mentees, or enlisting a third party, such as HR, in the mediation process. Finally, prioritise your own learning and development, and be prepared to gracefully stop the connection if it is evident that it is not helpful to either party.

It's ok! It happens! A mentor-mentee relationship is like chemistry, sometimes there's no reaction! A good mentor will recognize this and step away paving the way for another mentor in the best interests of the mentee!

Build trust by establishing other ways to connect. Practice active listening and be open to feedback. Everyone's communiation style is different so, you must pinpoint common grounds of interest to connet.

To communicate openly, start listening intently and putting aside your judgments and thoughts. Be curious to understand the other person's reason for this disconnection. Only then can you express appreciation for their honest point of view and evaluate together the following steps, trying to find synergy in this problem-solving phase. The optimal solution will come naturally

Create generative conversations, be open to changing the nature of shared learnings and communication styles. Listen for meaning and communicate from a how can we learn and grow this relationship.

Express your concerns and needs while actively listening to theirs. Together, redefine your goals and steps forward, ensuring they align with both parties' aspirations. This approach not only salvages valuable relationships but also reinforces the foundational leadership principle of mutual respect and growth.

We shifted from formal meetings to walking meetings, injecting energy and a fresh perspective into our discussions. This simple change fostered more open communication, aligning our expectations and enhancing our learning journey. Flexibility and willingness to experiment can transform mentorship.

Reflect on Individual Expectations: Take time to reflect on your own expectations for the mentorship and compare them to what your mentor may expect. Understanding any mismatches can help you approach the conversation more effectively. Initiate a Candid Conversation: When discussing your concerns with your mentor, focus on using "I" statements to express how you're feeling and what you're experiencing, rather than placing blame. For example, instead of saying, "You're not providing enough guidance," you could say, "I feel like I could benefit from more guidance in certain areas.

Engaging with a community is often as impactful on our growth as any mentor (if not more). It can spark innovation, increase motivation, and enhance learning. It can even lead to new mentor relationships that might be a better fit.

When it's time to officially end the mentee-mentor relationship, it’s important to consider message channel and message content. For message channel, determine if you want to send an email or use phone or video call. This depends on the length and depth of the relationship: if you've just begun working together, an email is sufficient; if you've had a longer relationship, a phone or video call is more appropriate. For message content, consider these three key messages: 1. Appreciation for their time so far. 2. Acknowledgement of trying to realign relationship goals. 3. Politely end the current relationship. If the relationship ends on good terms, offer that you will recommend others who might be a better fit as a mentee or mentor.

Again, it's very much a question of perspective, and it's important to understand that any mentoring relationship typically has two protagonists. Assuming the #learner is paying to be mentored, has a contract in place, and can evidence the failure, it should not be difficult to secure a refund. Conversely, if it's the #mentor who judges the relationship to be failing, they may also terminate the contract, assuming 'termination' is permitted. In my experience, it is more often a #sponsor who decides that the "relationship in leadership development is not working", often because they run out of money or can't see an immediate #returnoninvestment (ROI). Any breakdown in relationship is invariably disappointing for all stakeholders.

Let the relationship cool down… if the mentee gets themselves in trouble… let them know that you are there for them… if they reciprocate by contacting you… learn from the past and avoid pitfalls… be non judgmental and in some cases simply say, “ how can I help you” then listen…

After over more than two decades mentoring thousands of business leaders around the world, I have used all of the methods listed. Open, honest communication is central to any mentoring relationships. Getting back to basics, like revisiting the clients goals and making sure we are headed in the right direction together is the first step in the reassessment process. We constantly adjust our methods and strategies based on changes in the clients needs. If all else fails, we might take a 90 day break or I might help the client find a mentoring relationship with another mentor who can better meet their needs. There are many mentors / coaches and I prefer matching my clients to someone that I know to dropping them to select a new mentor blindly.
