Few pointers can be on identifying their unique voice and message, would provide tips on effective communication techniques. Most important would be encouraging more and more practice and also soliciting feedback to build confidence and refine their presentation skills.

It may be a bit of challenge to be comfortable with public speaking. We all went through this step early in our careers. There are several tips to give, however I will focus on one- always be prepared and ready for each of your public speaking appearances. If you have a set of slides know them well, practice them well! Once you prepare for each appearance that will boost your confidence. Remember you have something unique to offer!

Go with something that you’re passionate about or highly skilled and experienced. Before I discovered this, it was torture trying to speak about things other people wanted to hear because it required a lot of research and memorization. When you speak from your heart and/or your subject matter expertise, public speaking becomes effortless! You’ll be able to help and inspire people from a place of authentic compassion. The fears and insecurities decrease as well because it doesn’t feel like a speech. It feels more like a conversation you’re having with people who need your help. The best way to find your brand and fulfillment, is to find your niche within your passion and wheel house, then find the people who need you.

To assist mentees in developing their public speaking brand, I suggest establishing 4 to 5 guiding principles aligned with their vision. I encourage writing, discussing, and sharing these principles regularly to enhance memorability and consistency in their speeches, fostering a strong speaking identity.

Beyond simply identifying their expertise, go a step further and explore the specific challenges or aspirations their ideal audience faces. By understanding these "pain points" and tailoring their message accordingly, your mentee can create a brand that resonates deeply with their target market, fostering trust and establishing themselves as a valuable resource.

It's easy to say "find your voice" but much harder to provide steps to do that. Encourage your mentee to pause and reflect on why this speaking event and their message matters to them. They should be able to develop an emotional connection with their content. Even if they are speaking about a "dry" topic like training in a new process, they should know why they care and what it matters to them. Tapping into that emotion while drafting the message will bring their authentic self to public speaking. Before the speech begins encourage the mentee to find a moment to be quiet, remember their purpose for speaking, and connect to their own emotions. That will help their authentic voice and personality come out during the speaking engagement,

I have learn that skimming over accomplishments provide a foundation to the details of the talk. After all, I’m here because of something I know. But what is most important is why I’m there and no one else at that time. I don’t have to prove I’m the SME when I get on stage, but I do have a responsibility to show why I’m there. Once I have accurately validated my presence, I remind clients/crowds that my experience was an experiential journey with the hope of a warm reception.

Rapport is extremely important. As a listener, I don’t want to feel pandered to, and I want to feel included in the presentation. Eye contact, choice of inclusive vocabulary (speaking “with” instead of “to,” or “everyone” or “we” instead of “you guys”) can connect with the audience in powerful ways, and creates buy-in.

I don’t think you can capture that with KPIs, likely the reason the people using these frameworks aren’t asked to speak themselves. Perfect pitch does not make a rockstar. I agree with identifying strengths and constructive feedback. I might encourage a mentee to try canvassing for a cause they truly believe in, and give a “praise sandwich” for their opening lines and arguments. They will improve with practice and they will learn how to read the room. This is a muscle and it needs to be used in order to grow. Like most things in life, it’s half enthusiasm and the rest is talent and technique.
