The science alone is important, but not sufficient in an increasingly competitive world market for labor (there are a lot of smart science people out there), so you need these complementary people skills, business know-how, and an understanding of how to reach out to the market. Also, Material Science is so broad that you either need to specialize and focus (which is limiting your options) or widen your horizons to include jobs you never imagined before. Make sure your instrument skills are coming through, as skills like NMR, X-ray, and biotech are crucial to making an impact in today's market.
