What do you do if your Manufacturing Operations internship is not helping you develop leadership skills?

Obviously, we must enhance their skills and know what their strengths are, to be able to align them with the needs of the company. Spaces must be created to be able to guide your team appropriately and effectively. In this way, know those aspects that must be improved.

Seek out opportunities within the internship where you can take on leadership roles or responsibilities, such as leading a project or coordinating a team, and communicate with your supervisor about your interest in developing leadership skills.

I will share my interest of developing Leadership skills during the internship with my immediate supervisor and request him / her to provide me the relevant opportunity. Simultaneously, I will also try to find out different ways of developing leadership skills during my internship and continue putting my efforts for the same.

I'd look at the selecting criteria of interns, to ensure we have selected the leadership quality in the first place. Secondly, I'd look at the existing staff and pick potential leaders after observing their capabilities & skills. I'd then direct and train them to inculcate positivity & a can-do mindset. The next step is to nurture, motivate & bring them up the ladder gradually with a special leadership/ management program, and then keep monitoring & evaluating constantly. The identified high performers need to be further guided, whilst rewarding periodically for their achievements. They will be happy and confident and continue to deliver great results. This is a reliable mechanism to strengthen the backbone of any company.

One key thing to look at when looking at managers, is success. If you truly, fully, look at the tools they have been given, the environment, capital, manpower, or whatever other factor, and what comes out of their presence is success, it is the single most quantitative result to prove their value. If cost per product goes down, retention goes up, customer satisfaction up, or whatever other category... it is indicative to the success of your managers. At an internship, look for signs of success; source the reason for that success. Is the source for that success limited to one area and under utilized? Is the source best kept where it's at as it is the environment in which it thrives best? Is it an environment which nurtures further success?

I agree to it and want to add that if you try to solve a problem then you must be like an outsider of the process with no preconceived thoughts and solutions based on previous experiences , behave like a child and use techniques like why why upto five layers means start with first why and then second why after you get an answer to first why and so on till you reach fifth why most likely this fifth and answer will be your final question answer to the problem now this problem can be tackled through a small group of the process holders doing small small kaizens with almost zero cost

Gap analyses help establish a reality chexk. The target and where are the shots hitting or failing. The stats xan be shared with the team, get their feedback to identify key areas to reinforce to steer towards the desired outcome.

In my experience the best way to take initiative in getting experience is to figure out what I could be doing to make my managers or my co- workers jobs easier. In Operations specifically the goal is increased efficiency, find ways to be more efficient or create it that directly impacts the convenience of your peers. And remember to make it a sustainable fix, they will resent you if it requires you there to turn the handle.

Take initiative yes, look for a ways to take a project or task that involves leading a team, making decisions or guiding others. This could provide you with hands-on experience in a leadership capacity.

If you're not getting the leadership development you seek from your internship, take the reins and create your own opportunities for growth. The biggest part of building relationships is to show that you care and that you are willing to do anything to help others. Managers who do not work with associates every now and again do not have the same respect as those who do work with their people.

Take time to reflect on your experiences and identify areas for improvement. Consider keeping a journal to track your progress and reflect on how you handled various situations.

Self assessment is vital in any roles growth. Once you establish your strengths and struggles, you can ensure your mentorship will be the most effective. It's empowering to recognize growth, acknowledge where you succeed and identify growth opportunities.

Never in any capacity think that you know everything about the process, the machines, or the people. There will always be someone out there that knows more than you. So go into every day with an open mind of wanting to learn more and grow, as well as, have those grow around you.

Knowledge is the key. For being a leader you have to know how work is done. As much as you work on field by your hand, your skills will develop and once your skills and knowledge is developed, you are ready to lead.

Explore opportunities outside of your internship to develop leadership skills, such as joining student organizations, volunteering for leadership roles in campus projects, or participating in leadership development programs.

Interns are required to be very proactive to make good progress and improve their leadership skills. They should be always on the lookout to learn new things, take up additional responsibilities and challenging assignments, try to join cross functional teams if possible, exhibit good interpersonal skills, actively seek feedback from their supervisors or managers on a regular basis and take corrective measures based on the feedback.
