In my mind, the approach to solving or formulating the solution matters in solving creative problems. My advice is, don't go for a technical solution first. Try to formulate the solution without algorithmic technicalities, it will open up your mind to creative solutions. After the non algorithmic solution then, fill the methodical building blocks with existing algorithms, if they don't exist modify or create it. If you go directly for a technical and algorithmic mind set to solving a problem, you will get stuck in yourself. This will add creativity to your solution.
