You then point them in the right direction, and they will justify it to themselves.

In other words... find out if they care. Because if they don't, you might as well pack up and go home. If you can't get them to care about the project, maybe you can help them care about the outcome. "There's a team bonus of $100,000 if we get this done by next Friday. And I would like to help everyone get their share."

When getting down to the work at hand, avoid hyperbole. And despite the many times you've heard someone say, "Fake it till you make it", DO NOT try to speak with authority about details that you are uncertain about. Credibility is about trust. Give it to get it.

Just remember, people are far less likely to attack an idea if it's THEIR idea. Get the audience involved in the drafting of the final solution. That way they will feel a sense of ownership of it.
