What do you do if your leadership skills are questioned during an interview?

News Flash! To be able to discuss learning experiences, you first need to HAVE learning experiences. Prepare for this challenge. Take the initiative to identify and attend leadership courses and workshops. Be a student of people; look for examples of great leadership and dissect those individuals - they may be closer and more accessible than you think. Is mentorship a possibility? Also, do your interview homework. Is there a particular leadership model that the employer subscribes to? If so, key on how your own leadership experience and LEARNING relate to that model. (If your experience and learning DON'T relate to the employer's model, you may have just turned over the most valuable info-rock of all.)

Once upon a time I interviewed for a senior executive position, did my homework, and absolutely nailed the interview. The key decision-maker called my cell phone before I could even get down the road, excited about how well we would work together. Then he shared his perspective of what that would look like. Suffice it to say that our leadership styles and expectations were very different, even incompatibly different. I kept driving. That's not necessarily a ding on that executive; each style of leadership has its strengths and weaknesses, benefits and liabilities. Some compliment one another like ice cream and milk on a warm, summer day; others blend more like mud and green beans. Know YOUR leadership style before you walk in the door.
