I don't care who you are, you have past jobs you worked, people you met in school (pre and post secondary), people you've met from many walks of life, friends, family, etc. and they can all potentially refer you to people. Most people are just too afraid to utilize their network. You want to do it in a way that soft sells what you do and doesn't put hard pressure on them to help you.

For example: You're a digital marketer with knowledge on facebook ads—you run facebook ads for restaurants, but you also coach people on how to run/create ads for their businesses. This can be a great way to lower the risk when starting your own freelancing business in marketing.

Dedicate around 10% to 20% of your income to savings. Allocate a portion of your savings for investment. Diversify your investments. Seek professional help.
