One would agree that seeking feedback is very important especially if your supervisor seems unimpressed. Two things are worth noting here; either your supervisor explained the assignment or guided you and you didn’t take notes or understand (and probably not ask any questions) Or your supervisor expected that you should know what to do and how to do it based on probably your experience, CV or qualifications. In this case seeking feedback would entail that you carry the work to your supervisor and plead for him to walk you through so you have an understanding of what you missed out or didn’t get right. While working with your supervisor always ask questions and get clarity. Avoid assumptions and be humble even if he/she is younger.

2 Show Initiative

Once you've received feedback, it's time to show initiative. Don't wait for more instructions; take charge of your learning curve. Research ways to improve the skills you're lacking and apply new strategies to your work. If your supervisor suggested better time management, for example, start organizing your tasks more efficiently. In my experience, communication is key in this regard. One thing is to have a to do list and a Diary close to you at all times. Planning your assignments, day, week, month is one key way of communicating your ability to carry out planned tasks whilst documenting learnings, challenges, successes and failures. An organized day or schedule is halfway successful. If by the end of the day you are able to debrief with your supervisor and plan the next day or share with him updates of activities of the day and their status on a daily, weekly and monthly basis then you would have helped yourself and supervisor better manage time and labour hours.

3 Communicate Clearly

Clear communication is essential when addressing concerns about your performance. Keep your supervisor updated on your progress and the steps you're taking to improve. This doesn't mean bombarding them with daily updates, but rather providing thoughtful, periodic summaries of your achievements and challenges. Learn how to communicate using short and precise sentences. Relative terms sound better than absolute terms (numerical sense). Make use of percentages, ratios, rates and scores. And where necessary give absolute values. Another tip is to rephrase questions or statements for clarity and confirmation. Most at times we forget that communication is only complete when the receiver gets the intended message from the sender. So while taking instructions or listening you could always rephrase the sentence and ask if that is the intended sentence, question or statement.
