1 Reflect First

A great tool to use in this case is what I call "Killer Assumptions" it is generally used in the experimentation phase; however, it has applicability here. Every idea we have is filled with things that must go right in order for that idea to be successful. Make sure you are writing them down and addressing them. 1. Start by asking yourself: What are the things that must go right in order for my idea to work? 2. From #1's list, which ones are absolutely necessary for my idea to work? Now make sure you revise your idea to overcome those in Step #2 (they might even be some of the things that you have heard from your critics)

When someone criticizes your ideas try talking to them about it. Politely ask them to explain their reasons and really listen to what they have to say. Their feedback can help you get better and also shows that you're open, to learning and changing which can lead to teamwork.

Language matters when you go and seek feedback. Do not go to a friend/colleague and ask: "What do you think of my idea?" Our natural reaction is to criticize and you will get negative feedback. Something you do not need at this first phase. Instead ask them: "Can you help build my idea?" That invites a much different conversation. Acknowledge that your idea is still being worked on and you are seeking how to make it better. It someone still criticizes, turn it around. For example: they might say, "your idea is too expensive to develop" you would say, "Ok great, how might I make it cheaper to develop?" Invite them to help you strengthen your idea.

This reminds me of a policy that Google had called "bring your flock" the premise is that your idea would not move forward unless you were able to convince others inside the organization to back your idea - because if you could not convince your friends you are definitely not going to convince outsiders. How do you do that? By getting others to build on your idea (see my response under "2 Seek Feedback") The more folks you get to build on your idea the less it becomes "your" idea and now it is a collective "our" idea and now others have a vested interest in seeing the idea succeed.
