What do you do if your HR consulting communication lacks trust and credibility?

I believe this has less to do with your communication or articulation and more about the actions you take to address the pain points of your client. Some suggested actions are: 1. PARTNERSHIP : Be an ally to your client or stakeholders regarding their people problems. 2. LANGUAGE : Speak their language and not the typical HR jargon-laden one. This creates an unnecessary "you vs me" divide. 3. CREDIBILITY : Always see through the end of any ongoing interventions. Present the executive summary and connect the findings/results to how the intervention helped in plugging the identified gaps. 4. TRUST : Don't hog the limelight and project yourself as a hero. Bask in the reflection of your client's success and not the other way round.

In my experience, the key is to be willing to ask and accept feedback from your client, to better understand their preferred style of communication and working preferences, to be able to adapt your style. Using examples from your own experience and evidence to back-up your views and opinion can support clear communication and builds trust. Credibility and professionalism are some of the principle foundations in providing support and advice to clients which in turn, can create trust.

If your HR consulting communication lacks trust and credibility, focus on transparency and honesty in your interactions with clients. Take responsibility for any mistakes and work to rectify them promptly. Build rapport by actively listening to clients' concerns and addressing them with empathy and professionalism. Finally, consistently deliver on promises and provide evidence of your expertise through case studies or testimonials.

Based on my experience, to address this issue, I'd start with self-assessment e.g. identify communication gaps and consider client feedback. I'd also focus on transparency and clarity on clear communication, realistic expectations, and data-driven insights. In addition, I'd have to deliver on promises and be accountable e.g. meeting deadlines and following through, and importantly building trusting relationships with active listening, empathy, and open communication. I'd have to demonstrate expertise and value e.g. industry knowledge, tailored solutions, and measurable results. Finally, I'd have to ensure regular updates, anticipate needs, and utilize different communication channels e.g. email & video conferencing.

Communication is the lifeblood of every interaction. Self-awareness of your communication style isn't just about personal growth; it's the cornerstone of effective collaboration, negotiation, and leadership. Understanding how you convey your thoughts and emotions empowers you to connect more authentically and influence with integrity.

Admit mistakes or errors if they occur during the consulting process. Taking responsibility and offering solutions to rectify the situation shows integrity and builds trust with clients.

Do a one on one meeting with people raising concerns, and note down their concerns and address them one by one . Take their objections and concerns in a positive manner , accept which you thing is genuinely correct,work on them and incorporate changes required for your own benefit . Some of the worries can be a result of miss understanding or office politics. You can take top 5-6 concerns , work on them and show changes to win trust and confidence . Don’t give feedback on feedback , do your best and keep trying it until you change perceptions.

Focus on building strong relationships with your clients based on mutual respect and understanding. Take the time to get to know your clients personally, understand their needs and goals, and tailor your communication and services accordingly.

Sometimes, why your communication as an HR consultant is not convincing has nothing to with your communication skills. It can be because you are not convinced about what you are trying to sell. It could be because you are not convinced that the solution you are proposing will make a lasting impact or that solution is addressing the real problem or that you are the right consultant/consulting firm for the particular problem. The best of the consultants will walk away from a potential assignment (or will suggest another consultant firm) if they are not sure that they can add value in the context. Sometimes, saying 'No' to a client is the best way to build credibility. This can also lead to getting assignments where you can add real value!
