As a general manager, my goal is to make sure the team members are happy and make sure they understand that they are empowered to make guests happy. Happy team members are loyal and take ownership of the property. An empowered team member will go out of their way to make sure all guests have a great stay. They do not have to wait for a manager approval, they just do what they think is the right thing to do. Guests who experience this level of service usually have a great stay and become loyal to the hotel and tell others to stay with us in the future. Each loyal guest creates more revenue, and this effort usually costs less than trying to find new guests to stay at the hotel. But it all starts with happy and empowered team members.

I’ve had success in challenging my teams to assist in identifying areas where we can increase efficiencies while also reducing expenses. Getting group buy in can be the key in getting everyone on board and ensuring successful implementation of changes. Monitoring should be ongoing after implementation by requesting feedback from partners / team members.

I have had success by first just reviewing operations. When coming up with ideas myself or with coworkers I challenge myself to come up with ideas that do not include reduction in anyway. Focus on what your hotel's most positive revenue generator is and amplify your review in that area, time period, brand standard etc.
