The idea has to be great for them to follow through times of low morale. Ideologies can start revolutions, it is what changed the world.

Acknowledging and appreciating the hard work and contributions of each team member works all the time. People love to be appreciated. This could be anything from getting them a special gift on their birthday, taking them out on their day off and this one is the less known act but goes a long way: taking them to spa because working in a film production is so strenuous that our bodies are left in so much pain and discomfort. So it's these small acts of gratitude that can go a long way and help boost the morale of a production team.

1. Give them a break. Sometimes burnout can cause people to lose interest in things they'd otherwise love. 2. Remind them of why they started. 3. Provide them with some sort of assurance, so they regain a bit of faith in you and the project. 4. Reward them in some way. Special treats on set, day off, e.t.c.

From my experience, morale being down in work environments may be from workers lost some sort of trust within upper management for whatever reason. It starts with me. I need to set expectations of what we do and how we do it, and how I take responsibility if something goes off the rails. No one really expects a perfect leader, but they need a respectable one who lives by the same rules they ask the team to live by. If I ask for feedback and give room for individual inspiration, people buy in and they offer perspectives I would never have. Then, If a shot isn’t working, I generally apologize to the crew and acknowledge that this was a risk I thought was worth taking but I was wrong, and ask for them for their support as we shake it off and move on to the next shot. In this way, I model the behavior I want to see on my team that creates a culture of creativity.

Find the excitement! I try to ask people what they want to be doing and fit that into the work they are actually doing! Occasionally, a short break is necessary to refocus and regain productivity.

I find that many of the people we hire as PA’s or AC’s or grips would love to sit behind the camera or in video village. Sometimes camera ops really want to become DP or directors. It rarely hurts my DP’s feelings to take a camera op as a shadow on a setup, and it never bothers me one bit to have extra people in pre-production meetings or looking at dailies. Giving people these opportunities helps them know that you care about them as individuals, not just hired hands. And once they’ve been given these opportunities, they’re far more likely to receive feedback from collaborators.

Understanding yourself and looking inward is key. Did you truthfully give it your all? Did you do your best? Were you able to deliver your best content, given the circumstances? if you can honestly answer yes to those three key points then you shouldn't worry about anything else. At the end of the day, everything will always work out if you know you gave it your all. You are putting together moving pictures. Be grateful you get to do this job because it could always be worse. To keep myself humble, I always repeat this saying: "You are only as good as your last job." Finally, as the late great painter once said, “We don't make mistakes, just happy little accidents.” If you keep those quotes in mind, nothing will ever be hard again.

If you don’t have the power to fire those who create conflict (and enjoy it) do your best to stay focused on the job at hand. And continue looking for other opportunities that would be healthy to be around. A diamond is beautified by heat and pressure and your career is no different. Appreciate the good that you have, accept the adversity as temporary and keep moving when the opportunity arises. ??
