Most successful business owners I've met have little to no formal education in manufacturing or engineering, but have a vast exoerience working on all kinds of projects, process and with different people. Manufacturing is more hands on, one cannot understand the world of difference between a machined component and a fabricated one unless they are on the shop floor. The approach and planning can only be effective with good experience. After you have spent good time on the shop floor, your other skills will complement this experience and give you the edge to stand apart and be more sucessful.

I've seen prople transition from manafacturing to other domains, whether it is moving to Mechanical Design or moving to IT, a different industry all together due to various factors like low compensation, lack of growth, low flexiblity, more physical exhaustion, etc. One must do research understanding the industry trends and know what to expect.
