What do you do if your executive team is struggling to foster creativity and innovation among employees?

The first step to improving your executives teams ability to foster creativity and innovation is to create a safe space for honest feedback and thought provoking banter. Unfiltered banter and questioning is necessary to break the chains of limited thinking which is prevalent in today’s business environment. Remove limitations you think not possible and focus on what could be possible. Creativity often comes from unreasonable or often absurd thoughts or observation. It is a push against the status quo and often is NOT safest choice. But it's in moments of confusion or moments of conflict that greatness emerges. So don't be afraid to have uncomfortable conversations. Embrace them and challenge yourself to do more in a new and creative way.

Patrick Lencioni's latest book "6 Types of Working Genius" is extremely helpful here. Not everybody has strengths or "geniuses" for creativity and innovation. Finding those people within your team is an important step. Freeing them up and giving them room to innovate is essential. You then need some folks who are discerning to shape that creativity into a new possible reality as not all innovation is practical. It is well worth a read.

We begin by identifying specific challenges or barriers causing blockage to creativity. Challenges could be lack of resources, fear of failure, poor communication etc. We can conduct employee surveys to understand their perspective, does organization culture embrace creativity. Also do an analysis of current organization structure to identify if there are any barriers , similarly look into leadership style, reward and recognition framework and communication strategy to understand any barriers

TIP - Embody innovation to inspire it. Before urging others to be innovative, reflect on whether you're demonstrating innovation in your actions and decisions. Being a role model for innovation means actively engaging in creative thinking, encouraging experimentation, and showcasing how to learn from failures. If you embody the innovative spirit you wish to see, your team is more likely to follow suit. People are inspired by example. Show that innovation isn't just a buzzword but a valued and practiced part of your leadership. By leading with innovation, you set a powerful precedent for your team, encouraging a culture where creativity and progressive thinking flourish.

Providing PDF and Word documents would not much help than buddying since this is the hands on experience to hit the highway switching gears. Trust is another tool to enable the team, you have just hired a Human and not a Program to feed in some code and generate instant output without any errors.

Assuming you have a positive work culture where people feel free to speak up, take chances, make admit and own mistakes, a few suggestions: be clear in communication that creativity and innovation are welcome, even expected; reward it when it happens and certainly do not embarrass people for trying and failing; maybe cite some past examples of such behavior and recap the positive outcomes of it; maybe just get the team out of the office for a day for brainstorming, for a retreat, maybe with an outside facilitator; maybe have a contest; maybe invite others in the org not on your team for fresh thinking.

Being creative and innovative when required needs acknowledging when to take off any routine and efficiency based hat you wear in the day to day. I would bring in the group required to be creative and have an open discussion to help remove those hats to come up with the potentially higher quality creative ideas. I would lead with agreeing on the space where it is okay to take mistakes because creative means switching to a discovery mindset where we could try something and be wrong. The whole aim of a leader is to encourage the team to bring out their best and this is one of the ways to do it in my opinion.

Let your team members know that your expectation for team members to succeed is for them to gain true insight into client needs, creating thoughtful solutions that deliver the desired result and…… sharing every success with team members so they can learn and apply what they learned from each other. Think about it, do you really care if the quarterback had a great game if the team lost? Creativity is most valuable when it is genuine and not forced or contrived. Offering non-traditional projects, creativity development days, and up-skilling all help to encourage creativity and innovation. Diversity is of course necessary to foster creativity as well. Often I am inspired to be my most creative self when I’m listening to speakers telling stories of backgrounds and experiences that are very different from my own. Lastly, at the core of inspiring creativity in a group setting is social safety. Making sure employees feel heard, respected, and valued is essential.

In my experience, we can foster creativity and innovation among employees and assist the executive team by performing the following: 1. Encourage open communication: Create a culture where employees feel comfortable sharing their ideas and suggestions without fear of judgment. 2. Provide training and resources: Offer workshops, training sessions, and resources on creativity and innovation to help employees develop their skills and think outside the box. 3. Celebrate success: Recognize and celebrate innovative ideas and successful creative projects to show employees that their efforts are valued and appreciated. 4. Foster collaboration: Encourage teamwork, collaboration at all levels to spark creativity & generate innovative solutions!

I agree in general: but there must be a clear mission and a set of specific goals to attain a “mission complete” status. Leaders must be attuned to both the mission and the goals, whilst cultivating the roadmap toward mission completion. This means the team must be both as sold on as they are inspired by the mission and equipped to execute toward the goals. It means further that there must be a process for and culture through which team members are induced to and apply their creativity; and it’s in that nexus - creatives in an environment with a clear mission/goal/roadmap - that innovation emerges. To be truly honest, it's essential to ask oneself three questions: - Whether the individual is the right fit for the current phase of the company or team. - The reasons behind hiring this particular person. - Whether any issues arise from the individual or the context they're placed in.
