What do you do if your engineering management project is facing multiple challenges?

Its normal to face multiple challenges as an Engineering manager. Two things I consider are very important during this phase. Communication and Prioritisation. We need to need to keep all lines of communication open with the team to make sure everyone is aware of the problem we are facing. Second part is ruthless prioritization , so that the team stays focused on the most urgent and impactful aspect of the project. In some cases , there might be a need to reaccess goals and deadlines with respect of the new challenges. Be open to Pivot if that is a direction that in needed.

What's the secret to successfully keeping engineering projects on track? It's avoiding "optimism bias," our natural tendency to assume that nothing will go wrong. The earlier you can catch or predict problems, the more likely the entire project will be to stay on track! Estimation is a challenging skill, but the golden rule of estimation is to remember Murphy's law: anything that can go wrong will go wrong. If you underestimate the time requirement for a year-long engineering project, and it turns out to need an extra 3 months, it will derail the entire team (and company). If you overestimate the time requirement for a year-long engineering project, and you finish it in 9 months, you'll be a hero. Under-promise and over-deliver!

Not all problems need to be solved (or even looked at and assessed). It is great practice to always go back to your north star, which can be one of the following: 1) the company's mission/vision; 2) the top metrics/OKRs you are looking at; 3) your "why" and motivation; 4) your core values. You can also employ the spirit of experimentation - fix a small part of it and see the effects. You may discover that some "problems" were just imagined. In the case that they were real problems, you can at least figure out to which extent they are problems and assess how much resources you will need to solve them. From there, you can do proper planning and ruthless prioritization.
