What do you do if your engineering career is threatened by the adoption of new technology?

In my view it’s quite simple if you resist change you get left behind! Whether it’s technology, process improvement or new challenges, jump on the bus and enjoy being involved.

Change is the only thing which is permanent. If you fail to embrace, then you will be out of business. One needs to be aware of the latest development in their field and continuously update them and their team.

I agree that as an employee you need to be versatile and flexible. But I often saw " embrace change" as a mantra from management to mitigate any disagreement to new policy. It often covered for poorly thought through policies. A certain degree of skepticism is warranted along with flexibility and accommodation. It can save your head from spinning with the thought of the moment.

I embrace lifelong learning. As a technologist, adapting to new technology is a critical skill to ensure longevity and success in an engineering career. Keeping abreast of new technologies and finding opportunities to use this technology in my workplace is how I keep up. With knowledge being democratized and available at our fingertips, it is getting easier to get the information needed to learn, network, specialize and collaborate with industry peers.

While it's important to stay current with the latest technology trends, it's crucial to develop critical thinking to make the right decisions for long-term success. Don't just flock around the latest, shiny new technology trend, use your own wisdom and common sense to determine what's best for you and your organization. Most often than not, the best strategies combine good old battle-tested technologies and established patterns with innovative, cutting-edge approaches and technologies to thrive.

Alright folks it’s time to stand up and acknowledge the lesser talked about but extremely impactful skills of being a software engineer. Communication. Empathy. Collaboration. Innovation. Kindness. Creativity. Ingenuity. These are distinctly human characteristics, and the bulk of programming is thinking and designing with others not the actual writing code bit. So let the AI augment your coding skills and make them as smooth as possible, while you double down on investing in the skills that are human about your job. Code is written for humans not computers. So be as human as you can and AI isn’t going to touch you.

Consider transitioning to roles that leverage your existing skills while incorporating the new technology. For example, you could move into a technical management, consulting, or business analysis role that bridges the gap between the old and new technologies.

Careen planning is an ongoing activity. We should always be cognizant of industry trends and technologies that show potential, however, its easier said than done. We need to keen an open mind as only then can we comprehend how well an idea can pan out in the longer term. For that to happen, its equally important to experiment and get first hand experience of new tech and trends. After that it will be easier to chalk out a learning path.

When I perceive that my engineering career might be threatened by the adoption of new technologies, I turn to strategic planning. This involves assessing my current skills and identifying which ones are necessary to adapt to or lead in the new technological landscape. I develop an action plan that includes short- and long-term goals to acquire these competencies. This might mean going back to school, pursuing specific certifications, or engaging in innovative projects within my company. With a clear roadmap, I can anticipate changes instead of merely reacting to them, keeping my career aligned with the future of engineering.

Learning how to leverage new technology for your business or company will pay dividends and increase your long term value. Ex: In the past on paper draftsmen were eventually not needed anymore but architects were and are in demand. Take a hard look at your career field and skills and make choices to point your career toward a sustainable future of opportunity.

Forward looking organisation shall set aside R&D budget to adopt new technologies and transform their process; it could be to make the processes more digital. Some organisations only embrace change suggested by their customers. Organisations shall plan to tackle tomorrow issues. Further, implementing new technologies can be time consuming based on the length and complexity of projects. Hence, these changes have to be strategically planned ahead with future goals. Technologies are dependent and also work in conjunction with each other. Implementing current tends in digital technologies can impact live projects hence, their development, integration with existing technology and implementation in projects have to be strategically planned.

In my experience, I have learnt a great deal more when mentoring someone else. Not to take away credit for all I have learnt being a mentee - personally I found it more fulfilling while in a mentor role as the benefit of that learning was amplified due to the fact that I was helping/supporting another individual become better and learning myself at the same time.

We all understand about Mentorship but may not know the impact of it. Having a good Mentor will lead you to create great careers. As a mentor, I have seen myself learning as part of the Mentorship to others. Mentorship has to be done with selflessness & ensure that your mentee gets extended help in progressing their careers or even personal life changes.

Mentorship is a two-way street for growth. Seek a mentor to navigate new tech or be a mentor to reinforce your expertise and lead. Mentorship fosters knowledge-sharing, skills development, and resilience. Embrace it to adapt, lead, and thrive amid disruption. Together, we build an agile, innovative engineering community.

The world always needs leaders and needs leaders who can train the future leaders of a company. Make sure you are training your replacement and building adaptable leaders in your organization. Higher leadership requires commitment to building leaders of character that never go out of style no matter the changing technological landscape. Additionally an organization cannot grow faster than its ability to recruit and grow appropriate talent. You can be part of this growth driver for tte business or industry.

As a leader, the one thing that you bring to the table is empathy. Technology is still a long way away from understanding and replicating human emotions, and when you're leading a team of engineers, your empathetic leadership approach will never be replaced. Now more than ever, the human side of engineering is critical.

Look for opportunities to learn the new technology, adapt your skills, and showcase your ability to contribute effectively in the changing environment. For example, knowledge sharing sessions. Networking with peers can also provide valuable insights and support during this transition.

If you truly resist technological changes, tell yourself that it’s okay to be a modern day Luddite. Consider leaving the center of tech innovation. Find peace and joy in a more traditional industry or in a developing country.

Networking certainly helps, and when changes in technology are coming at the speed of light there′s the option of joint ventures with bigger companies, or paying fees for patent use that will enable your company to adapt new technology fast (at a higher cost) but will provide the opportunity to remain in the market. Joint ventures also can be achieved for new markets, or when acquiring mfg operations overseas, keeping your costs competitive and gaining access to different technologies or know-how. Trust must be built up between parties, and teamwork must become an asset. The other important aspects mentioned in this article by other peers and colleagues are very important too, so you keep your eyes on the ball.
