What do you do if your employee training programs are failing to engage your staff?

I am sharing my learnings wrt training programs for sales teams. ? The context must be based on real-world scenarios that training program participants face. ? Solutions, recommended process/change must be do-able, and must have been done/implemented by someone – preferably the trainer/co-trainer, and not a theoretical rhetoric, o Above two should be deeply handled – ensuring that the participants understand, and agree that it’s a problem/enhancement/optimization that’s much needed, and the solution being suggested is a practical/do-able/best fit. We must spend the maximum time here. Once this objective is achieved, engagement mostly becomes self-driven at the participant level. As they say, teacher appears once the student is ready ?

When training programs lack engagement, identify the issues causing disinterest—outdated content, lack of relevance, or boredom. Gather team feedback for insights. Then, diversify training methods with interactive workshops, gamified learning, and peer-to-peer sessions. Keep content fresh, incorporating multimedia and aligning with roles. Continuously assess and adjust based on feedback to transform disengaged employees into enthusiastic learners!

Well, if your employee training programs aren't engaging your staff, it's time to reassess and make some changes. First, gather feedback from employees to understand why they're disengaged. Then, revise your training content to make it more relevant and interactive. Consider incorporating different learning styles, like visual aids or hands-on activities. Inclusion is vital in training as well as other areas relating to work..ask for opinions, suggestions..showing people that you value their input will be helpful in the planning stage of training..the trainer will gain a deeper understanding of how to create content that is suitable based on feedback and suggestion

To elevate your training program, actively involve your staff in its development. Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) are invaluable in this collaborative approach. They provide expertise and context, ensuring the training is not only informative but also applicable to daily tasks. Offer a variety of learning methods—online modules, interactive workshops, one-on-one coaching, and group mentoring—to cater to diverse preferences. Empower employees to personalize their learning journey, setting goals and celebrating milestones. This inclusive strategy promotes a dynamic learning environment where each staff member’s contribution shapes a more effective and engaging program.

? Share impact stories of successful adoption of skills/approach/process that are being promulgated in the training programs ? Core skill/enhancement for which the training is being imparted must be handled from the perspective of training/imparting learning, and not an overview – as that’s where adoption starts taking place, ? Some other must-have hygiene factors: Interactive elements, connect, break-out sessions.

Think about it like this: every training session should mirror your business goals, reflect your values, and move you closer to your vision. Integrate these programs with your performance management system by setting crystal-clear expectations, giving regular feedback, and celebrating achievements. To make learning more effective and engaging, it is recommended to break down complex concepts into smaller chunks that can be easily learned in a short span of time. This can be achieved through Spaced Repetition Learning, which involves reinforcing the learning material at regular intervals. To make the learning stick, it is important to grab the learner's attention for a short duration, around 9 times in a month. By doing so, you can ensure that the learner is interested and engaged in the learning process. Or, they will at least remember it.

To address engagement issues in training programs, it’s essential to incorporate interactive elements such as gamification, real-world scenarios, and problem-solving activities that relate directly to employees’ roles. Soliciting feedback and making adjustments based on staff input can also ensure the training is relevant and resonates with their needs.

una forma de voltear a favor de la empresa el compromiso de los empleados en los programas de entrenamiento es ligarlo a su compensación, ya que será la diferencia entre andar atrás de ellos o que ellos tenga interes por completar sus planes de desarrollo. Mi recomendación es que los programas esten alineados con la estrategia de la empresa, la función del puesto o el desarrollo de la persona en dirección a la cultura de la empresa y ligado a la compensación, con estos factores todos terminamos ganando.

Beyond the training session, we must gauge engagement by adoption and application afterwards. For that kind of engagement to take place, certain key components: ? Repetition by every manager, leader, senior leadership in every relevant forum – what gets repeated gets adopted/internalized – even at the risk of sounding overly repetitive, ? Tasks/assignments - Follow-through sessions – to ensure reinforcement of learnings, ? Real-life implementation by everyone – in every relevant meeting/forum – we mustn’t talk what we don’t walk – people see through the commitment level to a concept/skill/approach vs. theoretical rhetoric. Once training is taken as something that creates real-impact, engagement will start becoming lesser of a challenge.

There is an overwhelming amount of information available for employee training, and it's not surprising that employees often disengage when they are bombarded with inputs. To effectively engage employees, it's essential to ask yourself if you would care about the training material if you were in their shoes. Be honest and then ask yourself if you would pay attention to it if it weren't for work. Lastly, consider what would it take for you to care about the training material. This is where the 3 E's come in - entertain the employees long enough to educate them. If you succeed in accomplishing these two things, you will elevate their interest in the subject matter, making it more likely that they will apply it in their daily work lives.
